Preferred Qualifications: Specific interests in behavioral economics and/or experimental approaches to studying political science, economics, and/or finance.
Responsibilities & Requirements: Applied Econometrics, housed in the Department of Economics. The ideal candidate will be a researcher specializing in econometrics as a primary field, either in the areas of cross-sectional data, panel data analysis, or time-series analysis with special interest in issues linked to the analysis of volatility. The candidateâs research will demonstrate strong promise in terms of methodological advances and state-of-the-art methodologies and concepts. It would be a plus if the person has shown interest in working with applied econometricians and applied statisticians, either developing theoretical econometric tools (estimators, tests, etc.) or applying top methodological concepts to problems in a variety of fields in economics or related social sciences. We would expect this researcher to interact with junior and senior faculty across departments bringing the methodological expertise to develop and apply the proper tools to the data problems arising in a variety of fields.
The Center for Behavioral Political Economy is part of an exciting new initiative, undertaken as part of SUNY 2020, to hire 100 faculty members over the next five years to rejuvenate the intellectual capital of Stony Brook University and expand teaching and research in emerging fields of study that cut across traditional boundaries of academic disciplines. The interdisciplinary faculty cluster hires are aimed at addressing society's most vexing challenges through the collaboration of natural, life, and social sciences; technology; medicine; humanities; policy; business; and the arts. The positions are designated for faculty members whose research and teaching interests are interdisciplinary. The goals of this initiative are to strategically place Stony Brook University on the emerging frontiers of research and knowledge and to enhance our ability to shape new fields of discovery, learning, and engagement.
Behavioral Political Economy studies how individual-level mechanisms, beliefs, and decision-making processes relate to economic decisions. Grounded in the psychology of decision-making and primarily relying on experimentation, it is a bottom-up approach to understanding actual economic behavior as opposed to relying on theoretical assumptions about how rational consumers should behave in a global economy. It tests the assumption that people are selfish utility-maximizing agents and offers alternative theoretical models that incorporate emotions, altruism, fairness, inequity aversion, and so on. In addition, BPE involves designing incentives and institutions that account for peopleâs systematic biases and heuristics. The emerging field of Behavioral Political Economy extends the behavioral economics approach with the goal of explaining substantive phenomenon in finance (e.g. consumer behavior), economics (e.g. regulation, design of public programs and public institutions), or political science (e.g. law and economics). With the new cluster Stony Brook will become a national leader in behavioral economics, political economy, and laboratory experiments. Scientists from the Departments of Political Science, Economics, and the College of Business will be part of this cutting-edge, world-class research group while building on their existing strengths in these areas. We expect to make 5 hires over the next 1-2 years as part of the cluster to build on our existing strengths in these areas.
For the 2013-2014 year, we are searching for 2 additional positions as part of the interdisciplinary faculty cluster hires.
Experimental Political Economist: We seek a candidate whose research program addresses important political economy research questions using methods from experimental economics. We take a broad view of experimental economics and will welcome applications from any scholar employing these methods in his or her work, including, but not limited to, theories of risk preferences, social preferences, or bounded rationality. Topics of interest might include bureaucratic decision-making, market regulation, or income inequality. We are also interested in candidates whose work uses experimentation to address traditional political science topics such as formal and informal institutions, committee voting, elections, candidate competition, coalition formation, and corruption. The ideal candidate will show methodological innovation such as integrating techniques from political psychology and experimental economics, or combining methods such as field experimentation, agent-based modeling, and/or neuro/geno-politics. Overall, we are most concerned about the candidateâs excellence and potential to impact the field rather than his or her area of specialization. Behavioral Finance: Behavioral Finance, housed in the College of Business Behavioral finance describes how cognitive, social, and affective factors influence decisions made by individuals and organizations. The College of Business seeks a scholar who contributes to theory development with rigorous experimental research in behavioral finance and economics. In particular, we wish to recruit someone who will collaborate with other researchers in the College in Financial Economics, Consumer Behavior, and Organizational Behavior.
