Qualifications: In response to dynamic changes within the global environment and the design field, the Interior Design program in the School of Art and Design at San Diego State University is in the process of developing an innovative and research-oriented program, in concert with the university’s recent initiatives emphasizing academic research and cross-disciplinary collaboration. The Interior Design program is currently seeking qualified candidates for a tenure-track position that will be an integral part of this challenging and exciting transition team.
Responsibilities: Faculty responsibilities typically include eighteen contact hours per week. Candidates are required to teach undergraduate and graduate level courses in interior design, provide design and technological expertise, critical insight, and direct advanced undergraduate and graduate student research. Collaboration and coordination with part-time instructors is expected, as well as involvement in curriculum development. Faculty represent the School of Art and Design at community events, participate in service-oriented activities within the university community and the community-at-large, remain active in the profession and in appropriate professional organizations. Every faculty member is expected to assume a fair share of responsibility for non-classroom activities, in order to enhance the collegiality and effectiveness of the School, College, and University, and to promote the stature of SDSU in the community.

Additional: The School of Art and Design has 17 full-time faculty and is part of the College of Professional Studies and Fine Arts. Approximately 800 Art majors are currently enrolled in the School's undergraduate and graduate programs. The School offers the Bachelor's degree in Art with emphases in studio arts and design; the Master's and Master of Fine Arts degrees in Art with concentrations in studio arts and design; as well as Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Art History. Qualified candidates should have a terminal degree in interior or architectural design or other relevant advanced degrees, as well as current or recent college-level teaching experience. Applicants must be well-versed in design theory, history, and criticism, and capable of successfully incorporating technology (2D, 3D, and video) in the classroom. Portfolios (professional and teaching) should demonstrate expertise in the practice of spatial design, including residential and contract design, sustainable design, design with social responsibility, community engagement, and collaborative design. Candidates with design related credentials such as interior design or architectural licenses, and LEED accreditation will be preferred. Professional work should indicate awareness of the social and cultural contexts of design, and a commitment to interdisciplinary and collaborative approaches to the design process. Applicants should present a published record of scholarly design research, exhibit leadership through involvement in professional organizations and community service projects, and show strong qualities of professionalism and collegiality.
