Duties and Responsibilities:
The Mathematics Education Program in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction (CUIN) at the University of Houston (UH) seeks scholars and seasoned professionals for a faculty appointment at the academic rank of Associate or Full Professor to serve our Urban Education teacher preparation, Master's, and Ph.D. programs.
The University of Houston (UH) is the second most ethnically diverse major research university in the country and is designated as a Hispanic serving and Asian serving institution. Houston is the fourth largest and one of the most diverse cities in the country with a large international population. The College of Education at UH has a long-standing partnership with Houston Independent School District (HISD), along with other large school districts, to prepare highly effective teachers to serve the local communities.
The Department of Curriculum and Instruction offers a variety of undergraduate and graduate academic programs in multiple areas of specialization. Our programs have a special focus on social justice, and value community engagement, diversity, and student success. We welcome candidates whose experience in research, teaching, and service demonstrate our commitment to diversity, excellence, and interdisciplinary collaboration.
Primary research responsibilities include an active research program in mathematics education, seeking and acquiring external funding, publishing scholarly work in high-impact venues, and disseminating work to national and international audiences. Primary teaching responsibilities will include rigorous teaching of face-to-face, online or hybrid courses in undergraduate mathematics education programs for K-12 teachers, courses in graduate mathematics teacher education programs, and courses in the mathematics education doctoral program. A successful candidate will also participate in course and program development, supervision of graduate student instructors and teaching assistants, community outreach activities, and service to the Department, College, University, and profession.
This is a nine month appointment. Review of candidates will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled. The anticipated start date is August 15, 2017. Applicants must have a doctorate in mathematics education or related field, as well as demonstrate an active record of scholarship and external funding commensurate with experience. Experience teaching mathematics at the K-12 level is also expected.
