Sonoma State University is one of the 23 campuses of the California State University. Located in the Sonoma County wine country, 48 miles north of San Francisco, the University has an enrollment of approximately 9,000 students. As of spring 2014, the University had 595 faculty with 41% tenure-track. The University is comprised of six schools: Arts and Humanities, Business and Economics, Education, Extended and International Education, Social Sciences, and Science and Technology. Degrees are offered in 46 majors at the bachelor's level and 15 at the master's level. Sonoma State University occupies 274 acres in the beautiful wine country of Sonoma County, in Northern California. The Library has 38 employees, including 8 FTE library faculty, and approximately 40 student employees. Our collection consists of more than 750,000 volumes (print and e-book) and about 40,000 journal titles. Opened in 2000, the University Library in the Jean and Charles Schulz Information Center is a dynamic learning facility that features teaching labs, wireless access, varied study spaces, an information commons, a café, and an automated storage and retrieval system. DUTIES OF THE POSITION
The Research Services and User Experience Librarian will develop, assess, and improve research and public services in support of the University’s goals for student success. This person will work collaboratively to create an overall library experience for students, faculty, and staff that supports their learning and teaching goals and encourages curiosity, creativity, and critical thinking. S/he will manage and promote the library’s research help services, seek new methods of engaging with faculty and students in the research process, and identify and recommend emerging research help services. The successful candidate recognizes that students are more than just library users; s/he seeks to meet students where they are and to understand the needs of our diverse campus population. This person will be familiar with the wide range of resources and library collections available to students, faculty, and staff, and will help streamline ease of access to collections and the integration of collections with curriculum. This person will work in partnership with the Access Services Manager to identify strategic priorities and participate in policy and program development. This position also serves as a liaison to one or more designated departments and/or programs on campus, building relationships with faculty and students, providing specialized information literacy instruction and research help, and supporting the research and curriculum of designated departments. All tenure-track librarians work as a team to advance the library’s information literacy curriculum, and in these roles, provide instruction, research help, and selection of scholarly resources.
- Leads the Research Help program, including managing the desk and virtual reference service schedules and providing monthly reports on research help activity, ensuring that students and faculty have timely access to research help services
- Identifies and analyzes best practices and emerging trends regarding research services
- Assesses and evaluates research help services, and recommends changes to services and facilities to better support research services
- Works collaboratively with the Access Services Manager to assess and evaluate our users’ experience with library facilities, services, and access to information resources and recommend changes to policies and practices that impact the users’ experience in these areas
- As a subject liaison, builds relationships with faculty in designated departments, learns about the teaching and research priorities of the department, identifies opportunities for the library to support those priorities, and keeps faculty up to date about library plans and strategic initiatives
- Provides information literacy instruction and specialized research help to designated departments
- Participates in the Library’s general reference and research assistance activities including research help desk, reference by appointment, and online interactive reference services
- As a member of the library instruction team, works with other liaison librarians to create a cohesive, progressive information literacy curriculum
- Selects materials for designated departments and recommends specialized resources and/or programming in line with a discipline’s current and emerging priorities for teaching and research
- Participates in university committees, seeks out relevant service work, and develops a research agenda in line with expectations for all tenure-track faculty
To be recommended for appointment, the candidate must have:
- ALA-accredited Master’s degree in Library and/or Information Science
- Experience providing research and reference help, public services, or access services in an academic environment
- Familiarity with key concepts in user experience, including ideas about spatial design, wayfinding, accessibility, and human behavior in the built environment
- Strong problem-solving abilities and experience working with the public and providing excellent service to students, faculty, and staff in an academic environment; a strong service orientation, flexibility, and willingness to work with patrons to resolve issues
- Experience as a subject liaison or demonstrated ability to collaborate with faculty on projects and/or information literacy instruction; willingness and ability to serve as a subject liaison in multiple fields
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to listen and engage in productive dialogue
- Demonstrated leadership ability and experience setting priorities, including the ability to plan and manage projects, build support from key stakeholders and colleagues, present evidence in support of decisions, and implement change
- Ability to work both collaboratively and independently in a constantly changing environment; demonstrated experience working with teams, incorporating diverse perspectives, and building consensus for change
- Ability to fulfill the scholarly and service expectations of a tenure-track position
- Ability to communicate with and assist a diverse campus community, including students, faculty, and community users of all ages, skill levels, and ethnic and cultural backgrounds
- Willingness to work a full-time schedule, which may include evenings and weekends, and to perform a variety of tasks, as needed
- Experience providing instruction to students in an academic environment
- Experience or familiarity with instruction tools such as LibQual+, NSSE, or other tools for evaluating patron interactions with the library
- Evidence of commitment to professional development, scholarship, and the ability to fulfill the requirements of tenure-track criteria
- Record of scholarly achievement
- Experience providing work direction for others (for example, to library staff) and leadership in a professional environment
To be recommended for tenure, the candidate must demonstrate satisfactory performance in four areas: teaching effectiveness; scholarship, research, creative achievement and professional development; service to the University; and public service and service to the community. Although tenure may be granted at any time, contract provisions specify that "the normal period of probation shall be a total of six (6) years of full-time probationary service and credited service, if any. Any deviation from the normal six (6) year probationary period shall be the decision of the President following his/her consideration of recommendations from the department or equivalent unit and appropriate administrator(s).” Tenure is required for promotion above the level of Associate Professor.
