The Office of International, Graduate & Extended Education recently established a full-time position of Dean of Graduate Education (classification of Administrator III, 12-month). The Graduate Education Office provides strategic leadership and day-to-day management services to support and administer more than 50 graduate programs across the Cal Poly campus. Reporting to the Vice Provost of International, Graduate & Extended Education, the Dean of Graduate Education provides vision, strategic leadership and day-to-day management oversight for graduate program strategies, policies, and processes at Cal Poly to support graduate student success.
INTERNAL ONLY RECRUITMENT - Only currently employed tenured Associate Professors or full Professors of the Cal Poly faculty will be considered for this position. A committee will review applications beginning March 20, 2017. The anticipated starting date for the position is negotiable. The Provost will appoint the successful candidate after consultation with the Vice Provost of International, Graduate and Extended Education.
The primary duties and responsibilities of the Dean of Graduate Education include:
Serve as a strong proponent of student success by promoting program learning outcomes and program assessment;
Collaborate with faculty and staff to invest in and strengthen graduate education, revise existing graduate programs and, as appropriate, develop new graduate programs;
Provide leadership in the exploration and implementation of best practices in graduate education;
Participate in academic program review of graduate programs, including interfacing with Academic Programs and providing input to program review teams in entrance and exit interviews;
Ensure policies related to graduate programs are up to date and followed;
Oversee the process for determining graduate student awards, such as the Outstanding Graduate Student and the Outstanding Thesis Award;
Oversee processes for awarding financial support including: graduate equity fellowships, tuition waivers, TA & GA appointments to graduate program applicants;
Serve as chair of the Graduate Studies Committee and attend weekly academic senate curriculum committee representing graduate programs;
Administer the California Pre-Doctoral Program and the Graduate Equity Fellowship Program;
Provide students with accurate and helpful advising regarding graduate education opportunities and coordinate activities with Career Services;
Work collaboratively with stateside graduate program coordinators, Extended Education, and admission to facilitate recruitment strategies for graduate education opportunities;
Supervise direct reports and provide expertise in the Graduate Programs office, including relevant planning and fiscal issues;
Work collaboratively with the Academic Senate Chair, the Academic Senate Curriculum Committee Chair, faculty, staff, and administrators to promote excellence in graduate education;
Work collaboratively with Admissions, the Office of the Registrar, and individual graduate programs by guiding and supporting the resolution of a wide range of potential graduate student related issues impacting advancement to candidacy and formal study plans;
Oversee the Digital Commons submission process for reviewing formatting compliance with all thesis/project reports;
Provide regular progress reports to the Vice Provost of International, Graduate and Extended Education.
Attend annual CSU Graduate Dean's Council and Western Association of Graduate Schools meetings represent university;
Work collaboratively with all of the academic and administrative offices to facilitate an annual orientation program for graduate students during Fall Conference week.
Manage Graduate Education Office and staff.
Minimum Qualifications (Staff Only):
REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Must be a current member of the instructional faculty (not FERP) holding the rank of tenured associate or full professor in an academic unit at Cal Poly
Terminal degree in academic field of faculty appointment
Excellent interpersonal skills
A demonstrated interest in and enthusiasm for graduate education, including but not limited to traditional graduate programs that address industry and career needs;
A demonstrated record of being a strong advocate for faculty scholarly, teaching and creative efforts in graduate education;
An ability to work collaboratively with multiple constituents;
Strong commitment to shared governance;
Possess superior interpersonal and written/oral skills in communicating with campus and external constituents;
The ability to represent the university effectively;
Possess qualities including integrity, transparency in decision- making, and an entrepreneurial spirit.
A demonstrated record of respectful and supportive relationships with members of the Cal Poly staff

Must be willing to travel and attend training programs off-site for occasional professional development.
Must be able to work overtime, occasional holidays, and adjust working hours to meet special jobs. May be called back periodically to perform work as needed on an emergency basis.
The person holding this position is considered a 'mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.
Successful candidate must be able to successfully pass a pre-employment background/fingerprint check.
This position is a "designated position" in the California State University's Conflict of Interest Code. The successful candidate accepting this position is required to file Conflict of Interest forms subject to the regulations of the Fair Political Practices Commission.
Full-time MPP employees are required to disclose outside employment at time of hire or within 30 days of taking additional outside employment subsequent to time of hire.
