Student Computing @ Cal is a collaborative partnership among between Student Affairs IT (SAIT), Educational Technology Services (ETS), the University Library, Campus Shared Services IT (CSS-IT) and Information Technology and Services (IST). This system administrator role involves serving as the technical administrator for hardware, operating systems, and network management that support the Unified Computing Lab Experience (one of the three major program focuses for Student Computing @ Cal. The role is responsible for the technical delivery of components including look and feel and standard software, hardware, and printing services.
The role plans and coordinates the installation, configuration and testing of hardware and software components. Work may involve central or departmental computer systems and networks.
This position will be located with the Endpoint Engineering and Infrastructure (EEI) in Information Services and Technology (IST). EEI develops and maintains The Berkeley Desktop ecosystem, which provides a reliable, integrated, and secure computing environment that reduces the amount of time faculty and staff spend maintaining their computers. The Berkeley Desktop supports both Microsoft Windows and OS X/macOS. Our services rely on tools that include IBM BigFix, JAMF Casper, Microsoft Active Directory, Microsoft Deployment Toolkit (MDT), VMWare vSphere, and Puppet. Currently, we our managing approximately 14,000 devices across campus.
This is a 2-year contract position.
Applies advanced systems/infrastructure concepts to define, design and implement highly complex network communications and solutions.
Proposes and implements highly complex system enhancements (software and hardware updates) that will improve the performance and reliability of the system.
Manages centralized computer servers and makes recommendations for purchase or upgrade of new computer hardware and cloud services. Also analyzes, acquires, installs, modifies and supports cloud services, operating systems, databases, utilities and Internet/intranet-related tools. Must promote DevOps approaches and use of automation.
Leads programmatic activities related to change management, stakeholder facilitiation and team facilitation to support the Student Computing @ Cal initiative.
Conducts highly complex systems programming and systems support activities and highly complex programming tasks.
Applies advanced systems/infrastructure concepts to operate the campus' internal data communications systems, including LANs and WANs. Also administers security policies to control access to systems. Must promote a DevOps mentality in all approaches.
Initiates, plans, designs and implements networked systems.
Executes security control to prevent hackers from infiltrating campus information.
Maintains security systems for routers and switches.
Leads product design and lifecycle management for the Student Computing @ Cal service, involving virtualization, cloud based technology support, and lab experience.
Demonstrates good judgment in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions.
Interacts with senior internal and external personnel. May lead a team of systems/infrastructure professionals.
Must be able to communicate technical information in a clear and concise manner across the organization and at varying levels.
Must be able to both work in a team and work autonomously to complete projects at a campus-wide scale.
Must be able to problem solve both technical and non-technical issues in a complex environment across multiple organizations that is highly decentralized and highly distributed.
Must have excellent communication skills with the ability to describe complex technical topics in non-technical language
Must be able to navigate organizational boundaries and constraints and have good negotiation skills to be productive when working with multiple teams and organizations simultaneously.
Must have worked on system management projects with more than 100 machines. More than a 1000 machines is a plus.
Must have expertise in a common scripting language such as PowerShell, Python, or BASH or experience with a common programming language such as Java. Publicly available source code is a plus.
Must have experience with managing more than one operating system (Windows, OS X, Linux).
Must have experience with IBM Endpoint Manager, JAMF Casper, Bomgar, or other system management tool.
Must have experience overseeing Active Directory Domains over multiple OUs and sites, including users, groups and objects, group policies, logon/logoff scripts, remote administration.
Must have experience mitigating security issues that impact workstations, servers, and networks to determine threat levels, risks, and solutions.
Has advance knowledge, skills and abilities associated with problem identification and resolution.
Has advance knowledge necessary to design, set-up, operate, and correct malfunctions involving application of technology systems.
Requires knowledge of other areas of IT.
Bachelors degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training
