The Foothill-De Anza Community College District is currently accepting applications for the faculty position of Instructor, Adapted PE, De Anza College.

Under the direction of the Dean, Adaptive Learning Division and Disability Services instruct a variety of day and evening, and on- and off-campus adapted physical education classes for students with disabilities. Conduct fitness evaluations, maintain evaluation records, and review results with students. Establish, update and refine fitness goals according to the needs of the student. Develop and implement student educational contracts, including on-going assessments of fitness levels of individuals with disabilities and prescribe an exercise program designed to fit individual needs and goals.
Standard duties expected of all faculty include development and evaluation of curricula, maintaining scheduled office hours, attending department and division meetings, pursuing professional growth activities, and performing other duties consistent with the role of an instructor. Instructors also have the opportunity to serve on District and college committees and participate in campus extra-curricular activities.
- Ability to instruct students with a variety of disabilities in a classroom setting.
- Ability to teach small and large group classes.
- Ability to assess fitness levels of individuals with disabilities and to develop an exercise program designed to achieve individual fitness goals.
- Ability to develop an individualized exercise program based on a physician's recommendation and the student's goals.
- Ability to design programs appropriate to the population and meet current trends.
- Ability to use appropriate technology to enhance student learning.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as a member of an interdisciplinary team.
- Ability to write reports and develop outreach and recruitment materials.
- Ability to teach and communicate effectively.
- Knowledge of the medical aspects of disabling conditions, specifically in the psychomotor domains.
- Knowledge of the methods and principles of teaching students with disabilities.
- Knowledge of state and federal guidelines and academic accommodations as required by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Section 504 of the 1973 Rehabilitation Act.
- Knowledge of current research literature on adapted physical education including assessment, exercise prescription, and fitness evaluation.
- Understanding of, sensitivity to, and respect for the diverse academic, socio-economic, ethnic, religious, and cultural backgrounds, disability, and sexual orientation of community college students, faculty and staff.
- Master's degree in physical education, exercise science, education with an emphasis in physical education, kinesiology, physiology of exercise, or adapted physical education OR Bachelor's degree in any of the above AND Master's degree in any life science, dance, physiology, health education, recreation administration, or physical therapy OR the equivalent AND Fifteen (15) semester units of upper division or graduate study in Adapted Physical Education.
- Experience teaching adult and older adult students with varied disabilities preferably in a college setting.
- Current CPR certificate.
- Experience teaching adapted physical education classes including general conditioning, water exercise, and back and balance exercises.
- Indoor, office environment.
- Hearing and speaking to exchange information.
- Dexterity of hands to perform the tasks required of the position.
- Regularly stand, walk, and sit for extended periods of time.
- Ability to lift 40 pounds
