Job Summary Overview: The Glass Department, within the Division of Fine Arts, Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), invites applications for a full-time faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor to commence fall 2019. RISD recognizes diversity and inclusivity as fundamental to its learning community and integral to art and design education. We welcome candidates whose experience in teaching, scholarship, professional practice, or service has prepared them to contribute to our commitment to diversity and excellence. Job Qualifications Required: The Glass Department is a highly experimental and dynamic environment in which glass is taught as a visual art medium. It is essential that applicants are conversant with contemporary art history, critical theory, and both traditional and nontraditional approaches to glass. Candidates' studio practice and teaching must show a solid commitment to innovative research, investigation and experimentation. Candidates must demonstrate ability to teach technical, material, and conceptual problem solving to all levels of undergraduate and graduate students, and must have an active studio practice complemented by facility with a broad range of critical discourses, writing, and contemporary social and cultural dialogues. While an MFA is expected, candidates whose professional experience and substantial record of achievement in art, glass and/or hybrid fields will be considered. Candidates should have a high level of expertise and recognition in their field, and a dedication to experimental and inclusive pedagogy. Fluency with teaching a range of techniques and processes within the Glass Department (Hot Shop, Kiln Room, Cold Shop and/or Optics Lab) is expected. Ideal candidates are able to teach a wide range of students at all studio levels across the department – from sophomore to graduate, while attending to diverse perspectives/approaches to making and critiquing work. Candidates should have a fundamental understanding of material and conceptual problem solving, demonstrate a range of making skills, and in-depth knowledge of glass (combining technical, material, cultural, social, technological aspects of the material). Applicants must have an active interest in teaching experimental, cross-disciplinary courses between Glass and other disciplines, Job Qualifications Preferred: A minimum of 3 years teaching experience at the university or college level is preferred.
