General Description: Illinois Institute of Technology invites nominations and applications for the position of Dean of the Instituteof Design (http://www.id.iit.edu).Since its founding in 1937 as the New Bauhaus in Chicago, the Institute of Design (ID) has pioneered thedevelopment and integration of design and planning methodologies, human-centered design andstrategic planning approaches in design and business. Today, ID is a graduate school of designcommitted to advanced education and research with internationally leading professional programs andacademic research. The school has thirteen full time faculty members and more than thirty adjunctmembers teaching courses in communication, product, interaction, systems, user research and strategicdesign. The school offers a Master of Design (MDes), a dual degree in MDes and MBA, a Master ofDesign Methods (MDM) and a Doctor of Philosophy in Design (PhD). ID created the first PhD program indesign that continues to be one of the largest Design PhD programs in the country. The faculty engage intheoretical, methodological and thematic research projects in fields such as healthcare, strategic design,socio-technical systems, urban systems, social innovation and sustainability. Through its academicprograms, ID prepares graduate students to respond to current and emerging roles in design for today'sfast changing social, economic and technological environment. ID continues to build strong ties withindustries, public agencies, nonprofit organizations and local communities through a wide range of uniqueprograms such as conferences, executive programs, workshops, sponsored class projects and academicresearch.ID is poised for growth at a pivotal moment in its 79-year history as we look for a new dean who can leadthe school into the next phase of its evolution. In order to enable this mission, the dean must have astrong commitment and capability in fundraising, developing interdisciplinary research and teachinginitiatives as well as further enhancing the strength of the current programs. We expect that the newdean will:● enhance visibility of the ID programs both nationally and internationally● enhance ID's reputation through thought leadership● prioritize and lead fundraising to build ID's strategic initiatives● bring synergy between professional education and academic research● explore the scale and scope of the program for ID's growth strategy● engage with students, faculty, staff and alumni to help shape ID's culture and students'experience● guide ID to become the leading voice of design innovation in business and society.
