Important Information about Bank Street College of Education Bank Street College was founded in 1916 as the Bureau of Educational Experiments (BEE) by Lucy Sprague Mitchell, Harriet Johnson, and Wesley Mitchell. In keeping with the emerging child study movement of the time, and the broader aims of the “Progressive Era,” the BEE’s purpose was to conduct applied research to learn about what environments and practices promote children’s learning and development - as a social good - and to educate teachers based upon this research. In 1950 the Bureau of Educational Experiments was renamed Bank Street College of Education when the Board of Regents of New York State granted accreditation to confer the Master of Science degree. The college’s academic programs now include children’s programs (infants through eighth grade); professional development with school districts and community-based organizations; teacher education (e.g., infancy and early intervention; dual certification in general-special education; dual language/bilingual education; teaching of English to speakers of other languages; museum education); educational leadership, and child life (professionals who work in medical settings to mitigate children’s experience of medical trauma). All of these endeavors, including the Straus Center’s work, are guided by the college’s mission. Mission The mission of Bank Street College is to improve the education of children and their teachers by applying to the education process all available knowledge about learning and growth and by connecting teaching and learning meaningfully to the outside world. In so doing, we seek to strengthen not only individuals, but the community as well, including family, school, and the larger society in which adults and children, in all their diversity, interact and learn. We see in education the opportunity to build a better society.
