Job Summary/Basic Function: Job Summary: The Associate Dean is the Chief Operating Officer (COO) of the School of Graduate Studies and advises the Associate Provost for Research and Sponsored Programs & Dean of Graduate College on priorities, funding models and resource allocation for graduate education. The School of Graduate Studies collaborates with academic deans, department chairs, graduate program directors and graduate student advisors in innovating, developing, operating, assessing and improving the graduate programs at Lamar University. The Associate Dean serves as an ex officio on Lamar University Graduate Council in formulating and revising academic policies governing graduate education, examining the academic standards of graduate courses and curricula, and promoting sustainable growth and continual improvement of graduate programs.
Essential Job Functions: 1. Oversees graduate admissions, academic progress to degree, financial support, student affairs, and the certifying of masters and doctoral degrees; 2. Collaborates with academic colleges and departments to recruit, admit, and retain a diverse graduate student body at Lamar University; 3. Engages faculty across all colleges to develop and innovate degree and certificates programs that meet market demands of graduate students; 4. Defines quantitative metrics and performs data analytics for evaluating the quality and performance of graduate programs across the disciplines, including reviewing the qualification of graduate faculty members; 5. Interacts with department chairs, graduate program advisers, the college deans, directors of interdisciplinary programs on the full range of issues affecting graduate education; 6. Coordinates the reviews of graduate programs and oversees their Program Improvement Review process; 7. Advocates for graduate research supported by sponsored programs and internal grants; 8. Assists in preparing for external accreditation reviews of graduate programs; 9. Serves on campus-wide and University-wide committees as designated; 10. Collaborates with other academic and administrative departments on campus to advise graduate students in academic success and career placement; 11. Applies modern tools to continuously enhance academic reviews procedures and improve operational efficiencies in the College of Graduate Studies; and 12. Represents Lamar and interface with external agencies (e.g., THECB, TSUS, regional and national forums, etc.) on issues pertinent to graduate education. Other duties may be assigned to this position on a regular or occasional basis to respond to needs of the university.
Minimum Qualifications: Minimum Education Required: An earned doctoral degree from an accredited institution
Minimum Experience Required: A successful record in teaching, research and service that supports the rank of tenured associate professor or full professor according to established university criteria; An established track record of academic publications in peer-reviewed journals listed under Science Citation Index Expanded (SCIE), Social Sciences Citation Index (SSCI), Arts & Humanities Citation Index (AHCI), and Emerging Sources Citation Index (ESCI); and Experience as an academic director at the program, department or college level in a higher education institution.
Key Competencies: Understanding the needs of graduate students of diverse backgrounds; Experience in working with graduate students in completing degree requirements and performing graduate research at both masters and doctoral levels; Knowledge of pertinent Texas Higher Education Code in graduate education; Experience in external accreditation processes and program improvement review, including SACSCOC reaffirmation and THECB graduate program reviews; Ability in facilitating continuous improvement of graduate programs in all disciplines; Knowledge in and commitment to engaging faculty members in developing and innovating certificate and degree programs at the graduate level; Commitment to maintaining the highest standard of academic integrity; and Interest and motivation in instituting effective and efficient procedures for reviewing graduate programs and graduate faculty qualification.
