| The University of Notre Dame seeks a scholar in Africana Studies for an endowed Hesburgh Chair, who will also serve as the Chair of the Department (https://africana.nd.edu ) beginning Fall 2021. Applications are welcome from candidates in any field of the humanities, social sciences, or fine arts. The Department of Africana Studies, established in 2005, is an interdisciplinary department devoted to the study of the histories, politics, and cultures of peoples of African descent across the diaspora. The department includes faculty with joint appointments in History, English, Political Science, Theology, and Education, and offers a major, minor and supplementary major. The department has an excellent record of placing its students in a variety of postgraduate programs and careers, such as law, medicine, and business, as well as graduate study in history, education, and anthropology in leading Universities nationally and internationally. Two Africana Studies Majors from the graduating classes of 2014 and 2015 were selected as recipients of Rhodes Scholarships; recent MacArthur award winner Nikole Hannah-Jones was also an Africana Studies major. The Department also houses the Doan Scholars Program, and was home for twelve years to the Erskine Peters Fellows Program. The successful candidate will work with the Dean of the College of Arts and Letters and lead the Department in faculty hiring, curriculum and program development. The Chair will teach existing courses, but will also have opportunities to design new and innovative seminars for advanced undergraduate majors. The College of Arts and Letters is working with the Department in the development of a center for the comparative study of race to begin in spring 2021. The Department Chair and the center director, a senior faculty member in Africana Studies, will collaborate in the growth and development of the center. Faculty from the Department of Africana Studies, and departments from throughout the College with interests in race, will become members of the race center. The Department is already a locus for faculty and affiliated faculty with research and teaching interests in race, Africana Studies, African American Studies, and the African Diaspora. Faculty research is well supported at the University of Notre Dame, in the Institute for Scholarship in the Liberal Arts (https://isla.nd.edu/) with funding and opportunities for travel, sponsoring conferences, and the acquisition of new materials to build collections in the Hesburgh Library. The Hesburgh Library Archives hold the papers of the late Rev. Cyprian Davis, O.S.B.
