Vermont Academy has an immediate opening for a Head Boys’ Varsity Basketball coach for the current 2020-2021 season.
Vermont Academy has a strong history of competitive boys’ basketball, featuring alumni playing in the NBA such as Bruce Brown Jr (Brooklyn Nets, Detroit Pistons), Jordan Nwora (Milwaukee Bucks) and Simisola Shittu (Chicago Bulls) in addition to numerous high-profile NCAA Division I players such as Tyrique Jones (Xavier), Symir Torrence (Marquette) and Marcus Santos-Silva (VCU).
The Head Basketball Coach directs and coordinates all aspects of the boys’ basketball NEPSAC AAA program in concert with Vermont Academy’s mission and core beliefs. Key responsibilities include preparing for and running daily practices, game day coaching, traveling to and from away games, attending program meetings, working with the Junior Varsity program as needed, coordinating with the Assistant Athletic Director and Communications Department on game results and social media updates, coordinating with college counseling to place interested athletes in college basketball programs, and coordinating with Admissions to recruit mission appropriate student athletes to VA.
The successful coach will be committed to working with and developing high school students within the context of a boarding school that promotes citizenship, teamwork, and sportsmanship.
Vermont Academy’s boys’ basketball coach must possess a strong ethical coaching philosophy with an emphasis on player development and positive team culture.
Other job requirements:
Teaching and/or Administrative duties, dependent on candidate strengths and school needs
Serve on the Weekend Duty Team, approximately once a month
Dorm parenting--either in dorm or campus housing, approximately two nights a week
Advising (4-7 students)
Other duties as assigned
Qualifications and Skills:
Player experience in college
At least 5 years of coaching experience, preferably at the high school or college level
A passion for independent boarding schools and the life-changing experiences they offer
A positive attitude
Commitment to player development
A strong interest in character development
Strong interpersonal and communication skills with students, adults, and colleagues
