Teaching Fellow - History
John Burroughs School
Middle/Upper School Teaching Fellows Opportunity Description John Burroughs School is seeking two Middle/Upper School Teaching Fellows, one in biology and one in history, to begin in 2021-2022 school year. The Teaching Fellows Program is a full-time, two-year program designed for recent college graduates or individuals completing an advanced degree who are interested in beginning careers in independent-school education. Teaching fellows will be paired with a mentor teacher in their subject area who will guide, advise, and support them throughout the two-year program. Fellows will teach two sections, allowing ample time to meet and collaborate with their mentor, observe classes, shadow students, and take part in all aspects of the life of the school community.* Fellows will participate in a professional development program led by the Assistant Head of School for Academic Affairs in conjunction with other administrators and educators that explores instructional best practices and provides cultural competence coaching, as well as examining approaches to planning lessons, leading discussions, designing and grading assessments, supporting struggling students, teaching students with learning differences, and communicating with parents and guardians. During the second year of the program, fellows will be assisted in their search for a full-time teaching position. By the end of the program, fellows will be sought-after applicants for teaching positions at top-tier independent schools and well prepared for successful careers as educators. Ideal candidates will be enthusiastic about the opportunity to work with middle and upper school students both inside and outside of the classroom and will have majored in one of the subjects listed at the top of the description. Knowing that the school’s ongoing work in diversity, equity, and inclusivity is essential to proving a rich educational experience and maintaining a strong and vibrant community, special attention will be given to applicants who have demonstrated their capacity to support and advance this work, such as through participation in campus affinity or resource groups and/or active involvement in school DEI initiatives or programs is a plus. * Teaching fellows will have the opportunity to sponsor a club and/or coach a sport, host a lunch table, monitor the student commons, chaperone student events, co-advise students, and chaperone school-sponsored trips (international and/or outdoor). Application Process Interested candidates should submit the following documents electronically to Debbie Drummond: ddrumm@jburroughs.org (314 993-4045 ext. 222).
Files will be reviewed as received with preference given to candidates whose materials are submitted by January 22, 2021. After reviewing all applications, Chris Front, Assistant Head of School for Academic Affairs, will speak to a select group of applicants by phone. From that group, finalists will be invited to participate additional meetings in mid-February, during which they will be interviewed, have an opportunity to familiarize themselves with our campus, and meet with students, administrators, and faculty members. (NOTE: Due to COVID-19 restrictions, many or all of these meetings may need to take place virtually.) If you have questions about the process or the materials, please contact Debbie Drummond ddrumm@jburroughs.org. If you have questions about the opportunity, please contact Chris Front, Assistant Head of School for Academic Affairs: cfront@jburroughs.org.
