Metropolitan State University, Minnesota’s public, urban university, is seeking to hire an Assistant Professor.This is a full-time position within the Mathematics and Statistics Department and is expected to start August 16, 2021.

Metropolitan State University has responded to the on-going COVID-19 pandemic by offering nearly all of its courses in a fully online format for the 2020-2021 academic year, limiting any in-person instruction to courses for which in-person learning is essential for students to achieve the learning outcomes. In addition, the majority of employees are working remotely, taking advantage of technological tools to engage students and complete their work. The search for this position will be conducted using web conferencing technology.
The School/Academic Department: Mathematics and statistics are essential in the study of science, technology, and the quantitative nature of the modern world. Students in our programs gain the analytic skills needed to study and solve a wide range of problems. They also develop superior problem-solving and critical thinking skills that are useful in a wide range of careers in science, technology, engineering, business, actuarial science, and education. In a typical academic year, the faculty member will teach five courses, split between two semesters. In addition, the faculty member will engage in scholarship, advising, and service.
Faculty members are expected to:
Demonstrate ability to teach Statistics and Data Science courses effectively at the undergraduate level
Engage in scholarly research or creative achievement
Provide evidence of continuing preparation and study
Contribute to student growth and development through advising and assistance and engage in service to the university and community
Demonstrate a commitment to serving a culturally diverse student body through delivering a student-centered education in a liberal arts and sciences context and possess the ability to work effectively with a wide range of individuals.
PhD in Statistics, Data Science, or a related field, such as Applied Mathematics, Mathematics, Biostatistics, Operations Research, Actuarial Science or Informatics. Only candidates who will finish their PhD before Fall 2021 will be considered
Demonstrated ability to teach at the post-secondary level effectively
Demonstrated ability to teach a wide variety of courses in applied statistics and data science
Demonstrated ability to engage in scholarly research and consultation
Communication skills (written & verbal) to communicate with a variety of persons and groups
PhD in Statistics or Data Science
Ability to teach inquiry-based courses in upper division applied statistics and data science courses
Evidence of excellence in teaching
Commitment to student-centered education and a proven ability to work with a diverse university community
Familiarity with programming language such as Python, R, Tableau, etc.
Ability to develop new curriculum and/or revise existing curriculum
