Stevens Cooperative School is seeking a full-time 8th grade homeroom and humanities teacher for its Newport campus.This individual will be responsible for ensuring the pastoral care of the students, teaching social studies and language arts, and assisting in writing recommendations for the high school application process. This teacher is also responsible for shepherding the cultural exchange program that is a signature part of the Stevens experience during 8th grade.

The Newport 8th grade humanities teacher will also exhibit a passion for fostering a strong culture of student engagement in learning, in close alignment with our mission. Our faculty models a spirit of collaboration and inquiry to inspire students to “explore, question and communicate in ways that will shape the future.” Candidates will be culturally competent with effective organizational and classroom management skills. Strong verbal and written communication skills are necessary in order to develop interpersonal relationships with faculty, parents, and students.
Experience with teaching humanities (social studies and language arts to 8th grade students with a commitment to integration of the two disciplines
Understanding of progressive education practices and exploratory, inquiry-based approach with real world application
Undergraduate degree required and completed masters degree preferred in content area
Ability to motivate and stimulate children's learning abilities through a range of experiences
Ability to cultivate and maintain a safe and inclusive classroom culture that values all voices and appreciates various perspectives
Experience in creating a safe environment for students to ask questions, take risks, problem solve and communicate their thinking.
Proficient with using technology (Google Suite and use of Smart Panels and Chromebooks)
Familiarity and experience with remote learning
Experience developing curriculum with knowledge of assessment practices
Knowledge and experience with maintaining written records of individual student development, which includes competency checklists, narrative comments on reports and leading conferences with parents and students
Collaborative and creative educator who is willing to work with colleagues of diverse backgrounds on pedagogical approaches, curricular alignment and instructional strategies with flexibility and resourcefulness
Interpersonal skills to interact effectively and sensitively with a diverse population of students, faculty and parent body
Skilled writer and communicator with a focus on timely communications with families
