Dean of Teaching and Learning Major Responsibilities The dean of teaching and learning is a member of the Upper School administrative team and works directly with the head of Upper School, the dean of college counseling and the dean of students. Responsibilities include: - Curricular life of the Upper School as it relates to course offerings, faculty gradebooks, student transcripts and the scope and sequence of departmental curriculum.
- Work with the director of diversity, equity and inclusion to assess and implement multicultural curriculum.
- Support the head of Upper School in creating strategies to recruit and retain exceptional faculty.
- Work with department chairs and advisors to guide students in making informed curricular decisions.
- Work with the dean of students with regards to attendance and disciplinary issues around academic dishonesty.
- Oversee the onboarding of new students and contribute to the Upper School admission process.
- Work with Upper School grade advisors, counselors, learning specialists and the Dean of Students to help students with curricular difficulties.
Opportunities and Challenges: - Work with departments on course placements and recommendations.
- Work with the dean of college counseling and department chairs with regards to University of California course approvals.
- Attend parent coffees and student events as needed.
- Serve on divisional and all-school committees as needed.
- Audit pedagogical tools and practices and help align the School’s missions with its college preparatory goals (i.e., Mastery transcript opportunities). Propose alternative assessments measures.
- Work with the head of Upper School on student and faculty systems beyond the classroom.
- Provide faculty with professional development opportunities to learn more about current systems and practices.
- Assist in fulfilling the K-12 strategic plan goal of enhancing student wellness from the academic perspective.
Required Experience, Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities - B.A. required, master’s preferred.
- Minimum 5+ years teaching experience and demonstrated growth and advancement in responsibilities.
- Professional experience in progressive models of education and curricula.
- Strong cultural competency skills and track record of successfully working with families from diverse backgrounds.- Exemplary skills in team building and complex project management
- Experience with innovative assessment models for high school students.
- Proficiency in word processing, MS Office, Google Docs and Blackbaud learning management system.
- A friendly, gracious, professional manner and outlook.
- Strong written and oral communication skills.
- Impeccable ethics and a demonstrated commitment to confidentiality.
- Fluency in Spanish or a language other than English is preferred.
