![]() Porter College: College 1 Lecturer Pool (Ongoing) Porter College at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for an ongoing pool of part-time lecturers to teach sections of College 1, the first course of UCSC's Academic Literacy Curriculum. College 1 is a required core course designed to help students develop academic and civic proficiency in reading and critical thinking. Students will develop understanding of academic ethos and habits of mind and practice that are tied to a sense of belonging and academic success. This course prepares students for success in other UCSC courses. There is no placement exam for College 1; enrollment in this course is not tracked by proficiency in reading, writing, or critical thinking. Instructors meet with a seminar of about thirty students two or three times per week and present material from an established syllabus; assign and evaluate student work; meet with students in small groups; prepare grades, which may include narrative evaluations of student performance; hold weekly office hours; and carry out other typical instructional duties. Porter College is dedicated to studying the contributions that the arts and humanities make to a good life, a free and peaceful society, and a flourishing world. The Porter College 1 course (PRTR 1) explores a range of fictions and non-fictions in the context of these themes and the educational goals of the Academic Literacy Curriculum with a particular emphasis on racial equity.
