The Blake School seeks a dynamic, creative and reflective 6th-8th grade English Teacher who is eager to help students read and write with rigor, insight and imagination. The ideal candidate will have experience in fostering a diverse and supportive community committed to pluralism and a common set of values to prepare students for purposeful lives as community and global citizens. The teacher will work closely with a grade-level team and both the English and social studies departments to design units, activities and lessons that develop foundational skills for learning and inquiry that will support and inspire students throughout Middle School and beyond. Drawing from a reading and writing workshop model inspired by our ongoing collaboration with Teachers College, teachers focus on the skills and strategies authors use to compose meaningful personal narratives, literary essays, nonfiction articles, and persuasive arguments. This position is 1.0 FTE for the 2021-22 school year. This is a one-year position with the opportunity to re-apply for 2022-23. Blake is particularly interested in candidates who will enrich the diversity of identity, lived experience and thinking that makes a community strong and empowers students to engage across differences.

The ideal candidate will:
have at least a bachelor's degree in English or a related field
demonstrate experience with student-centered teaching practices: discussion-based classrooms, inquiry approaches to history and the social sciences, and curriculum/project design to inspire community engagement and to extend student learning beyond the classroom experience
be able to work with Middle School students who vary in ability and learning styles, both nurturing and challenging as necessary
have experience instructing diverse populations of students
have some experience in shaping an integrated language arts/social studies curriculum at the middle school level
demonstrate prior success in working collaboratively and harmoniously with other adults in an educational setting
