Upper School Chemistry / Math Teacher Opportunity Holland Hall was established in 1922 and currently serves approximately 1,000 preschool through 12th grade students in a coeducational setting. Holland Hall seeks a passionate, committed educator who is energized by work with students to serve as a full-time Upper School Chemistry and Math Teacher starting in August 2021. This teaching position is responsible for three sections of chemistry (a junior-level course) and one to two sections of math classes. The job will entail four or five classes per semester with two to three preparations, depending on the year. Average class size at Holland Hall is fourteen students. Science classes at Holland Hall are designed with student inquiry and discovery at the center of the pedagogy. We strive to provide students with hands-on/ minds-on, collaborative learning experiences including student experiences in the lab as much as possible. Math courses at Holland Hall emphasize conceptual understanding rather than memorization of procedures and algorithms. We aim to instill in students strong problem solving skills and the mindset that everyone is a “math person.” In addition to the on-level chemistry courses, this candidate may have the opportunity to teach higher level chemistry electives, including AP Chemistry. In the math department, the faculty member will teach two sections of a lower level math course, such as Algebra I or Geometry, during the initial year. While not required, it would be a benefit if this teacher were comfortable with higher level math courses as well. The candidate should have a history of evaluating student progress and offering individualized help to meet student needs. We value experiential learning, and we foster an atmosphere where curriculum is developed and refined to reflect the contemporary world. The position also entails serving as an advisor to a small group of upper school students starting in the second year of service to the school. This role entails keeping track of each advisee’s progress through ongoing communication with teachers and families. Job duties include, but are not limited to, the following: • Demonstrates a broad knowledge of chemistry and current science pedagogy • Demonstrates a broad knowledge of mathematics and current math pedagogy • Demonstrates an engaging and enthusiastic classroom presence • Incorporates a wide-range of assessment practices • Designs and implements homework and assessments that are consistent with school norms • Reports student grades and writes teacher comments periodically during school year • Manages and updates course materials and grades on PowerSchool Learning, the school’s learning management system • Communicates clearly and proactively with all constituencies of the academic community, i.e., students, parents, supervisors, colleagues, and alumni • Participates in ongoing development of curriculum through collaboration with colleagues • Differentiates for individual learning styles and provides individualized assistance as appropriate to meet student needs • Maintains a high level of organization in order to balance the teaching demands within a modular schedule Special consideration will be given to exemplary candidates who can also support a significant extracurricular activity or coach a sport. Interested candidates must have a Bachelor’s degree. A Master’s degree and teaching experience are preferred but not required.
