One year special contract in the Illustration department. The Illustration Department BFA program at the Maryland Institute College of Art invites applications for this full-time special contract (with potential for up to 2 year renewal) beginning Fall, 2021.
MICA seeks a candidate with a professional studio background in illustration and related design fields, along with knowledge of art and design studies to advance and diversify MICAâs current curriculum. The College seeks a professional illustrator with relevant professional experience in the discipline ofÂ
Illustration.Â The successful candidate will demonstrate proficiency in both traditional and digital media, conceptual thinking, and professional standards of the industry.Â Knowledge and experience over several illustration market sectors such as editorial, publishing, sequential arts, design and visual development are a plus as well as working expertise in the Adobe Creative Cloud applications.Â Â
We are also particularly interested in candidates who can speak to intersectional issues, including diversity, equity, and inclusion. The successful candidate will engage with transnational flows and processes of cultural exchange and address popular culture.Â
This faculty member will teach 18 credits per year (three courses per semester) at an art and design school nationally known for its dedication to teaching excellence, a rigorous liberal arts curriculum and for preparing students for successful creative careers. The candidate will be capable of teaching at all levels of undergraduate illustration education, including MICAâs First Year Experience.
The interdisciplinary nature of the Department and College requires that faculty maintain an active professional practice and meaningfully contribute in a variety of areas that include: all aspects of departmental operations and institutional governance involving departmental management, advising, institutional and departmental committee service and scheduled departmental and student activities and coordinating the department exhibitions of student work during the school year. In addition to teaching, all full-time faculty are expected to pursue research and/or professional engagements that contribute to the educational mission of the department and college.
Strong record of professional excellence as demonstrated by a portfolio of work and a selected client list of record or equivalent professional experienceÂ
Personal commitment to teaching on an undergraduate level using pedagogical approaches that are relevant and responsive to a student body that is rich in diversity across race, ethnicity, gender, class and their intersections
Accomplished in a broad range of illustration market sectors and/or related professional illustration sectors
Capable of teaching at all levels of undergraduate art & design education including MICAâs First Year Experience
Project management skills â the ability to coordinate community-based projects, class-sized collaborative events, and/or research
Ability to work in a collaborative environment, participating in advising, institutional and departmental committee service, and scheduled departmental and student activities
Two years of full-time (at least two courses per semester) teaching experience beyond graduate assistantshipsÂ
Knowledgeable about contemporary and historic illustration, art and theory and their relationship to broader social, cultural, economic, scientific, and technological contextsÂ
Shows promise or proven ability to enrich the aims for diversity, equity, and justice of the Illustration department and the College
MFA, MA degree or equivalent professional experience in a relevant fieldÂ
