Crossroads is a vibrant, relationship-based school with a founding commitment to the “greater community.” Started in 1971 and taking inspiration from the civil rights, anti-war and feminist movements, Crossroads was founded to be not just a school, but also a movement for positive social change in the world. This ambitious charge is part of the very DNA of Crossroads. Not only do our students engage in meaningful service learning and community service projects, but Crossroads as an institution considers serving the greater community a cornerstone of our mission. The journalism-focused Publications Department classes instill in students best journalistic practices and various skills including reporting and writing, AP style, layout and design, website maintenance, and broadcast. The goal of the program is to empower young journalists to be self-starters and independent workers as they publish Crossroads news on three levels: the web, print, and broadcast. The English curriculum seeks to instill in students a lifelong love and appreciation of reading, and to teach students to write English that—beyond mere correctness—fluently communicates deeper meanings and values. English teachers offer students the opportunity to study both traditional forms of argument and literary criticism as well as more creative forms of expression, such as personal essays, poems, short stories, journal entries, and interviews. The ideal candidate will possess the following skills and qualifications: - Minimum B.A. in English, Journalism, or related field; graduate degree preferred; relevant professional experience a plus.
- Experience teaching journalism, literature, and writing in a high school setting.
- Experience advising a student-run newsroom.
- Knowledge of trends in English and journalism and in the teaching of these disciplines.
- Experience planning student-centered, innovative lessons and collaborating with colleagues across grade levels.
- Value interdisciplinary thinking and can expertly guide students as they develop a deeper understanding of the role of journalists, informed readers and writers in society today.
