As a central service center for the entire campus, the Graduate Division works to guide and assist students from the moment of admission, through the various milestones of their progress, to the completion of their degree requirements. We provide academic, personal, and professional support services that are vital to the everyday well-being and life-long successes of Berkeley master's, professional, and doctoral students.
As the authoritative resource and chief advocate for graduate education, the Graduate Division ensures the equitable administration of policies governing graduate studies across Berkeley's 14 schools and colleges. As the administrative arm of the Academic Senate's Graduate Council, we partner with the faculty and staff of each program and the deans of each school and college to maintain the world-renowned quality of Berkeley's graduate education.
The McNair Scholars Program prepares approximately thirty selected Berkeley undergraduates annually for graduate study in Ph.D. programs in all disciplines and offers opportunities to participate in research activities nationally and internationally.
The Research Coordinator serve as the principal individual who plans, implements and coordinates the Spring and Summer research experiences for the McNair Scholars. This person directs and oversees the day-to-day implementation of a complex student research program. The research coordinator reports to the Assistant Dean for Graduate Diversity. Assignments are provided by the Director of the McNair Scholars Program who serves as work lead for this position.
Provides multicultural academic counseling across disciplines and colleges/schools to 'at risk' populations (e.g., low-income, first-generation college, underrepresented populations, etc.).
Assists in the planning, development and administration of specialized and complex research programs and projects that are designed to enhance student success. [P4 level]
Collaborates with the Director on short-term planning [this is a limited position; might be involved with short-term planning] that has budget implications for the coordination of the spring and summer components of the McNair Scholars Research Program
Participates as a member of the team that writes grant applications for existing and new grant opportunities
Coordinates recruitment of applicants to the program
Coordinates the Spring, Summer and Fall McNair Seminar classes
Develops curriculum for innovative academic and personal development seminars/courses.
Develops the spring, summer and fall McNair Scholars seminar syllabi
Organizes and facilitates instruction provided by guest lecturers in the Introduction to Research seminar
Participates in the planning and implementation of the McNair Symposium
Works collaboratively with staff, faculty, administrators, alumni, and students to explore/research innovative approaches in meeting the needs of a diverse and changing student body.
Provides advice and consultation on research guidelines on qualitative and quantitative research methodologies to McNair Scholars on their research projects reinforcing material presented in the seminars.
Assists the director in training, and supervising the work of graduate interns and paraprofessionals. Oversees, advises, and aids staff, graduate students, and student mentors in the provision of direct services to students to help them develop a successful graduate school application packet including a strong statement of purpose, personal statement, and letters of recommendation.
Develops a program to prepare and improve the teaching and coaching skills of the graduate student instructors
Media, Publications, and Graduate School Applications
Participates in the review, analysis and preparation of the Berkeley McNair Scholars Journal
Produces, prepares, and write materials and mailings for the McNair Scholars Program
Develops McNair Scholars Portfolios including bios, curriculum vitae and news clips
Seeks out and identifies faculty members who can share their expertise regarding graduate education opportunities. Consults and confers with faculty mentors, Graduate Division Office, and McNair Staff to provide scholars access to career and graduate school services.
Other tasks as assigned
Demonstrated competencies and advanced knowledge in theories of multicultural counseling, learning, identity development, human and career development.
Advanced knowledge of research methodologies and research designs.
Knowledge and experience in working with historically underrepresented ethnic minority communities, first generation college students.
Knowledge in the methodologies used to enhance student achievement, such as collaborative teaching/learning models, strategies for effective counseling and peer mentoring, small group facilitation and training, coaching, mentoring and advocacy.
Knowledge of and experience in conflict management and intervention strategies.
Extensive experience in multicultural competencies, and personal and academic crisis intervention; working with students to assist in clarification of ethics and values.
Advanced experience in group dynamics, facilitation, and training; comprehensive assessment of academic preparation and personal competencies.
Experience in establishing and implementing short and long term program goals and objectives; demonstrated effectiveness in mediation and conflict resolution.
Knowledge of academic curricula; strong knowledge of campus climate, structure/organizations, and culture.
Demonstrated experience in planning, developing, and administering evaluative instruments for measuring program effectiveness.
Advanced experience in planning, developing, and administering enrichment programs/projects, academic and personal development seminars, courses, and workshops.
Knowledge and experience in managing funds designated for special programs.
Knowledge and experience in researching, compiling and analyzing data, and generating reports; extensive experience in developing evaluative instruments specific to programs/projects goals and objectives.
Master's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training
Ph.D. preferred and or equivalent of training and experience.
