Brooklyn Friends School (BFS) seeks to hire a passionate and dynamic artist-educator for a full time Middle and Upper School instrumental music teacher position. Qualified candidates should have a strong background in teaching a variety of wind and string instruments to beginning through advanced students in grades 5-12. Comfort with and experience in utilizing interactive, creative and inspirational teaching techniques, assessments, and technology in the classroom are desired.

This position reports to the Head of Middle School in partnership with the Academic Leadership Team.
Teach small group and ensemble instrumental music classes for students in 5th-12th grade
Support International Baccalaureate music students
Collaborate and plan with colleagues and the chair of the Performing Arts department to develop curriculum and present performances throughout the school year
Facilitate cross curricular collaborations inter and intra divisionally
Oversee and steward the school’s collection of musical instruments and equipment
Participate in the pit orchestra for the annual musical theatre production
Other duties specified by Middle and Upper Divisions
REQUIRED PROFESSIONAL QUALITIES
Bachelor of Arts in the field or other area required, Master of Arts preferred
A skilled musician and experienced performer well-versed in a variety of musical styles and cultures
Background in teaching wind, brass, and percussion instruments to preadolescent and adolescent students
Experience with string instruments preferred
Experience in developing curriculum and building an integrated music program
Experience with student-centered and progressive teaching methods preferred
Proficiency with incorporating technology into the classroom and experience with programs such as GarageBand or Soundtrap
Professional dedication to progressive education, the division, and the whole school
Strong commitment to social justice, anti-bias education, and Quaker values
Ability to meet and adhere to multiple deadlines and strong organizational skills
Demonstrates strong written and verbal communication
