The Hixon Writing Center at the California Institute of Technology seeks a generalist Writing Specialist to help support the teaching and learning of academic writing. This part-time (20 hours per week), benefits-eligible position will involve tutoring academic writers working on projects in the humanities, social sciences, and in STEM fields; helping to develop and lead academic writing workshops and presentations; and supporting the ongoing operations of the Hixon Writing Center. A particular focus will be on ongoing, one-to-one support of undergraduate writers making the transition to college writing. The Writing Specialist reports to the center's Director.
This parttime position is anticipated to start September 1, 2021. Review of applications will begin June 14th, and the position will remain open until filled.
This job is an on-campus position that focuses on in-person student support. Once the Institute indicates it is safe for the staff of the Hixon Writing Center to return to campus, Writing Center staff will be expected to report to campus.
Tutor undergraduate, graduate student, and post-doctoral writers one-to-one and in small groups.
Help to develop and lead presentations/workshops for students on topics related to academic writing in the humanities.
Help to develop resources related to academic writing in response to student need.
Collaborate with colleagues to create an inclusive and accessible writing center.
Support faculty efforts to improve the teaching and learning of academic writing in their courses.
Work with undergraduate peer tutors to support their professional development.
Assist in administrative tasks related to program records and assessment, as well as other duties assigned.
Locate, read, and share recent research in writing studies and related fields as relevant to center operations.
An M.A. in Rhetoric/Composition, Applied Linguistics, TESOL, Education, English, History, Philosophy, or related fields.
Experience working with college-level writers on academic writing.
Experience working with multilingual writers.
Demonstrated commitment to working with diverse students in a collaborative and inclusive environment.
Familiarity with best practices in writing center pedagogy.
Interest in writing in the disciplines and/or writing across the curriculum pedagogy.
Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
Ability to manage multiple projects/tasks with limited supervision.
Ph.D. or significant work toward the degree in Rhetoric/Composition, Applied Linguistics, TESOL, Education, English, History, Philosophy, or related fields.
Demonstrated experience in writing center work.
Experience teaching in a first-year writing program or a WAC/WID program.
Familiarity with scholarship in the field of composition on topics relevant to the position (e.g. first-year writing, genre studies, transfer).
Training in applied linguistics and/or English language acquisition.
Experience with faculty development or program assessment.
Experience reading and responding to writing in diverse disciplines and genres.
Experience working within a STEM-focused curriculum and/or genre knowledge about scientific and technical writing is welcome but not required.
