Mackintosh Academy, a co-educational independent school serving gifted students in K through 8th, is seeking a Performing Arts (PA) Specialist Teacher for the 2021–2022 academic year. We seek a candidate who values the balance of intellectually challenging and creative program with developmentally appropriate and research-based practices. Our excellent student-teacher ratios allow for individualized instruction and education of the whole child. This PA teacher would be responsible for teaching in our “Great Hall,” working collaboratively with Lower & Middle School colleagues to implement an artistically strong, child-centered and differentiated curriculum to gifted children. Preference will be given to candidates with experience and training in working with children at this level.
Teach primarily Individuals & Society (I&S) to 7-8th grade, and possibly a few Language & Literature (L&L) classes to middle school students using a variety of best curricular approaches including: research skills and projects, simulations, debate, writers and reading workshop, readers roundtable, word study/spelling, and other best-practices.
Lead or co-lead a Middle School Homeroom and House (advisory) to facilitate the social and emotional development of the students. Participate in key components of Middle School including: morning meetings, class meetings, service and leadership opportunities, class and school-wide agreements, rituals, routines, and all-school gatherings.
Coordinates IB planning and implementation via a highly collaborative relationship with other grade-levels, specialist teachers, and Middle School leadership.
Implements a variety of instructional and assessment methods including integrated use of educational technology, design-thinking, experiential education, and project-based learning.
Participate in all functions of Middle School culture including service learning, experiential trips, spring trips, and other on and off campus functions.
Maintains solid, frequent, and effective communication with home, colleagues, and administration.
Participates in staff meetings, retreats, and on various committees.
Supports the overall mission of Mackintosh Academy.
Bachelor’s Degree required. MA preferred.
3-6+ years teaching experience required.
Knowledge of gifted children, a plus.
