Christ Episcopal School in Rockville, MD, a diverse community serving students from Preschool through grade 8, is seeking a dynamic part-time 6th grade English and Study Skills teacher for the 2021-2022 school year. The ideal candidate would be interested in joining a collaborative school community, providing a positive and challenging learning experience for each student, using differentiated learning strategies, integrating technology into the curriculum, and demonstrating flexibility as instruction may transition between in-person and virtual settings throughout the year depending on the impact of COVID-19 in the local Rockville area. This person would also embrace the families at the school and demonstrate a passion for helping middle school students develop socially, emotionally, as well as academically. A team-oriented person is a must.
The sixth grade curriculum focuses on historical fiction that ties to early American history. Writing is a strong focus as students prepare narratives, persuasive essays, business letters, poetry, and research papers using the 6+1 Writing Traits curriculum. Grammar and vocabulary are intentionally taught as well. Five English classes per week will be required. In study skills, the teacher will teach one class per week to both 5th and 6th grade students. The study skills curriculum focuses on organizational skills, study techniques, note-taking, research skills, mindfulness, and internet safety/tools.
A successful candidate for the 6th grade English and Study Skills teacher will have:
An Undergraduate degree (masters preferred) in elementary or secondary education.
Minimum of 2 - 3 years of teaching experience, preferred
An ability to differentiate instruction across subject areas
Experience with using technology in the classroom and the virtual environment
A desire to work as part of a team
Good time management skills
Initiative and creativity
Strong written and oral communication skills
A proactive attitude
A high level of energy
