Experience conducting workshops or teaching courses at the undergraduate level. Experience communicating research results to both expert and non-expert audiences.
Preferred Qualifications: Experience designing and conducting research. Experience with science communication research. High levels of proficiency in qualitative, quantitative, or mixed-methods social science or educational research. Experience designing new curriculum. Experience conducting workshops or teaching courses at the graduate level and/or for experienced STEM professionals. Experience conducting workshops nationally and internationally. Brief Description of Duties : The Postdoctoral Associate will assist the Principal Investigator in the Alan Alda Center for Communicating Science. Visit the Alan Alda Center for Communicating Science , to learn more about our center and its research. The incumbent will conduct research and ensure that all experiments are appropriately conducted following the policies and procedures of Stony Brook University. This Postdoctoral Associate will contribute to research on science communication in the area of forensic science and science in the courtroom and help advance the Center's research-based curriculum. This position provides a unique opportunity for an individual to help design and implement a research-based approach for science communication training that promotes effective science communication in the courtroom. The Postdoctoral Associate will work in close partnership with the leadership of the Alda Center at Stony Brook University and the Leverhulme Research Centre for Forensic Science at the University of Dundee, Scotland to design and trial new workshop models and conceptualize longer range partnership opportunities between the two Centers. This includes piloting new training courses and assessing their effectiveness. The Postdoctoral Associate will develop documents in the form of technical reports and peer-reviewed publications that disseminate learnings and best practices and contribute to the growing body of literature on science communication. The Alda Method combines improvisational theater techniques that help scientists to pay dynamic attention to the needs of their listeners and learn to spontaneously adjust to those needs. This approach integrates techniques to help scientists distill their message, shape compelling stories, create common ground, and use conversational language that fosters genuine human connections. This position is designed to advance science communication research and help create new training modules.
Working in collaboration with Alda Center faculty and staff, the successful candidate will be responsible for synthesizing research within the area of science communication with particular focus on communication of forensic science to a range of audiences within and outside of the courtroom, conducting new research, analyzing data, co-designing new curriculum, assessing the curriculum, presenting work at conferences, preparing publications, and collaborating on grant proposals. This position will receive support to become a certified Alda Science Communication Trainer and will help to implement Alda training in the U.S. and abroad. Therefore, the incumbent must have a willingness to travel and conduct Alda workshops nationally and internationally. The training experience will enable the fellow to conduct research on science communication in the context of real-world application. The candidate may also teach up to three credits per semester depending on need and interest and may also help to train new Alda Center trainers . The successful incumbent will have excellent customer service and interpersonal skills, exercising strong organizational and time-management skills with an exceptional attention to detail. Essential for this role is the adeptness to work independently as well as part of a team with a collaborative approach to problem solving.
Within the predetermined research scope and methodology, conduct research in the field of science communication, specifically focusing on science in the courtroom.
C ollect and analyze data, including periodical/literature search and utilizing specialized skills in related fields to analyze the collected data.
Collaborate with Alda Center faculty and staff to design and trial new curriculum
Conduct on-the-road workshops and/or teach courses at SBU
Participate/assist in manuscript writing for publication in scientific journals and/or presentations. May also assist in grant writing.
Other duties or projects as assigned, which may include attending scientific conferences and meetings.
