Bay Ridge Prep, a progressive, student-centered, K-12 independent school located in Brooklyn, New York, seeks an outstanding educator to join its Upper School (grades 9-12) faculty as History Department Chair for the 2021-2022 academic year. The ideal candidate must have at least 5 years experience as a successful high school history teacher, preferably in an independent school setting. Prior experience as a department chair is valuable but not a prerequisite qualification.
In addition to a passion for teaching history, the successful candidate will demonstrate creative and innovative leadership in shaping a curriculum that cultivates curiosity through inquiry-based research projects. An understanding of how crucial diversity, equity and inclusion is in the context of the history department curriculum is of the utmost importance, as is the ability to collaborate with other educators to integrate it into teaching and learning. The department chair will also oversee and implement a curriculum that integrates project-based learning, collaborative learning and student choice with an emphasis placed on critical thinking skills, problem solving, experiential learning, multiple perspectives, risk taking, writing skills and the development of civil discourse.
The successful candidate will have experience in developing units of study making use of essential questions. Depth is valued over breadth in curriculum design. Cultivating intrinsic motivation amongst students to create lifelong learners is a signature outcome for the program. As the leader of the history department, the candidate will work collaboratively with the history faculty on progressive pedagogy and innovative curriculum design and development. Above all, they must be fully committed to and enjoy working with adolescents and have the awareness and ability to understand diverse learning profiles. Content knowledge is a given but knowing how to be an effective classroom teacher is a key component of this position.
