This position is part of the Spirit of Gold Marching Band staff and is responsible for instructing the color guard area within the marching band, including but not limited to designing color guard programs that effectively complement and enhance the visual and musical program.
Vanderbilt University's Athletics Department prepares student-athletes to become leaders and champions in life by placing the highest values on integrity, character, sportsmanship and victory. The university fields 16 varsity teams (6 men's teams and 10 women's teams), 14 of which compete in the Southeastern Conference.
Duties and Responsibilities
Design color guard programs that effectively complement and enhance the visual and musical program.
Teach proper technique for guard equipment (flag and rifle) and body movement to all guard members of the Spirit of Gold.
Instruct members in fundamental and advanced dance, flag, and weapon techniques.
Evaluate members' abilities and designs equipment carriage accordingly.
Work closely with the Director and the other staff members to develop a visual program, including any needed flag and uniform designs.
Attend all rehearsals and performances.
Teach guard members program material.
Choreograph, arrange, and implement color guard routines as an integrated part of the marching band.
Create rehearsal plans in cooperation with the Director.
Recruit potential color guard members while retaining current members.
Ensure that the color guard is properly equipped for rehearsals and performances.
Maintain a cooperative working relationship with the Athletic Band staff and student members.
Manage all equipment necessary for rehearsals and performances including maintenance, repair, and acquisition recommendations.
Teach choreography to all guard members of the Spirit of Gold.
Create/write choreography for the guard members to perform.
Assist in teaching leadership skills to members of the Spirit of Gold.
Monitor students when in attendance at official athletic band events.
Other duties as assigned.
Bachelor's Degree is preferred
Prior experience with color guard instruction is preferred
