Position Title: Tenure Track Assistant or Associate Professor in Design, Department of Art
Posting Number: F2100161
Employer: State
FTE: 1.00
Position Summary:
The Department of Art at the University at Buffalo, The State University of New York, invites applications for a Tenure Track Assistant or Associate Professor in Design. We seek candidates who can serve as director for our undergraduate Design program and engage in interdisciplinary and experimental approaches to design research, practice, and pedagogy.
Situated in an innovative and experimental art and design program, the areas of Design and Art + Technology encourage cross-disciplinary inquiry.
The ideal candidate will demonstrate professional knowledge of the field and an understanding of design history, methodology, and critical issues in their own research agenda and design practice. An advanced level of expertise in one or more of the following areas is desired: print design and digital publishing, information design, interaction design, sustainability and social design, as well as experience in typography and other forms of visual rhetoric.
The department has recently launched PLATFORM, a new socially-engaged design lab. Candidates with an interest in community engagement and collaboration are especially encouraged to apply.
As a faculty, we strive to reflect the broad range of student communities at Buffalo, and we seek candidates whose pedagogy attends to student diversity in the studio classroom with demonstrated inclusivity in their teaching practices. Candidates with direct experience working with historically marginalized groups and perspectives are especially encouraged to apply.
Located at SUNY's flagship research university, in an emerging post-industrial city with a vibrant cultural scene, the department offers both a BA and a BFA in Graphic Design. Graduate programs in studio art, art history, theory, and criticism are offered at the MA and MFA levels. The successful candidate will be expected to maintain an active research practice, teach two courses a semester, serve on graduate thesis committees, direct the undergraduate Design program, contribute to the development of the Design and Art + Technology curriculum and the new socially-engaged design lab along with service to the department and university.
We respectfully recognize that University at Buffalo's location is within the traditional territories of the Haudenosaunee people, and that the present is always built on the past, which must be continually acknowledged. In the Department of Art, diversity, inclusion and equity are central to our mission. Art as a practice represents, reflects, critiques and dreams for a culture. It is a discipline of creativity, criticality and expression. By its nature, art balances the examination of culture through humility and critical inquiry. It is with awareness and acknowledgement of diverse and intersectional identities that we approach the practice and scholarship of contemporary art.
