Departmental Overview

The Student Support Services Program (SSS) is a federally funded TRIO program serving low-income, first-generation, and/or disabled transfer students. The program is designed to increase the retention and graduation rates of eligible students. Required services include academic tutoring, advice and assistance in post-secondary course selection, information on both the full range of student financial aid programs, benefits and resources for locating public and private scholarships; and assistance in completing financial aid applications. Other allowable services include education or counseling services designed to improve financial and economic literacy and assist students in applying for admission to graduate and professional programs. SSS is one of nine programs within the Centers for Educational Equity and Excellence and is part of the Transfer Student Programs Subcluster.

The AAC4 assists in the administration and coordination of all grant services and helps to ensure that all federal guidelines and regulations are observed. The AAC4 helps to plan and administer all SSS services, assists the director with strategic planning, program and budget management, and with leading assessment and evaluation efforts. The employee ensures accuracy, timely completion, and submission of the Annual Performance Report.

The SSS AAC4 understands and recognizes the challenges and responsibilities that many first-generation low-income students experience at UC Berkeley. The SSS AAC4 helps students balance their personal responsibilities with the academic demands of UC Berkeley. The employee also assists students in managing the various extenuating circumstances and unexpected crises that may impact their lives while ensuring progress towards graduation.

Responsibilities

• Handles most complex/sensitive multicultural, academic counseling across disciplines and colleges/schools to SSS program participants who are first-generation, low-income, or disabled students.
• Incorporating a variety of theoretical approaches, the incumbent manages a caseload of SSS students from post-admission through graduation.
• Provides course planning support, financial literacy/financial aid assistance, career and graduate school information, and study strategies support and assistance per federal grant guidelines.
• Works collaboratively with staff, faculty, administrators, other TRIO professionals, and students to explore innovative approaches to meeting the needs of first-generation, low-income students.
• Keeps breast of student trends in higher education, particularly those relating to transfer students.
• Plans, develops, and administers specialized and complex programs and projects that are designed to enhance student success.
• Assists with managing program funds in accordance with federal guidelines governing TRIO programs.
• Facilitates the processes of identifying, selecting, tracking, and serving SSS program participants
• Assists with SSS caseload distribution and assignments
• Manages grant aid participant selection and distribution
• Contributes to the selection, onboarding, training, and support of new and continuing SSS staff as necessary
• Facilitates the selection of graduate student interns including training and supervision
• Manages the SSS student engagement programs, including study skills and financial literacy workshops, wellness activities, community building activities, first-generation college series, and other cultural events.
• Establishes and implements short and long-term program goals and objectives.
• Maintains appropriate and accurate records on program participants
• Assists with preparation of yearly Academic Progress Review
• Develops a systematic approach to data collection, program assessment, and evaluation
• Assists with implementing overarching goals of the Transfer Student Programs Subcluster
• Assists with grant writing as necessary for grant renewal purposes
• Collaborates with faculty, staff, and other departments such as the College of Letters and Science, Financial Aid, Career Center, Residential Life, the Berkeley Coops to provide resources and support to students
• Hires, trains, and supervises the work of graduate interns and paraprofessionals

Required Qualifications

• Demonstrated competencies and advanced knowledge in theories of multicultural counseling, learning, identity development, human and career development.
• Advanced knowledge of research methodologies and research designs.
• Knowledge and experience in working with historically underrepresented ethnic minority communities, first generation college students.
• Knowledge in the methodologies used to enhance student achievement, such as collaborative teaching / learning models, strategies for effective counseling and peer mentoring, small group facilitation and training, coaching, mentoring and advocacy.
• Knowledge of and experience in conflict management and intervention strategies.
• Extensive experience in multicultural competencies, and personal and academic crisis intervention; working with students to assist in clarification of ethics and values.
• Advanced experience in group dynamics, facilitation, and training; comprehensive assessment of academic preparation and personal competencies.
• Experience in establishing and implementing short and long term program goals and objectives; demonstrated effectiveness in mediation and conflict resolution.
• Knowledge of academic curricula; strong knowledge of the organizational climate, structure / organizations, and culture.
• Demonstrated experience in planning, developing, and administering evaluative instruments for measuring program effectiveness.
• Advanced experience in planning, developing, and administering enrichment programs / projects, academic and personal development seminars, courses, and workshops.
• Knowledge and experience in managing funds designated for special programs.
• Knowledge and experience in researching, compiling and analyzing data, and generating reports; extensive experience in developing evaluative instruments specific to programs / projects goals and objectives.

Education/Training:

• Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.

Preferred Qualifications

• Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of diverse and complex issues significant to TRIO populations.
• Demonstrate sensitivity to the needs of underrepresented, low-income transfer students.
• Ability to learn and/or knowledge and understanding of TRiO legislation and rules and regulations surrounding grant funding.
• Knowledge of trends and issues facing transfer students as they transition to the four-year university, navigate a new campus culture, and move toward degree completion.

Education/Training:

• Masters Degree in counseling, higher education, student affairs and/or a minimum of four to five years experience in higher education relating to student development, academic support programs, and/or student success initiatives.

Salary & Benefits

This is an exempt, monthly paid position. Annual salary is commensurate with experience up to $86,000.00.
