Open-Rank Teaching Professor or Professor of the Practice in Digital Humanities
About the Opportunity
The College of Social Sciences and Humanities is the home of the Experiential Liberal Arts. Through its research, teaching, and engagement missions, the college collaborates across the university, the Northeastern network, and partners around the globe. We are strongly committed to fostering excellence through diversity and enthusiastically welcome nominations and applications from members of groups underrepresented in academia. Successful faculty in the College of Social Sciences and Humanities will be dynamic and innovative scholars with a record of research and teaching excellence and a commitment to improved equity, diversity, and inclusion. Strong candidates for this position will have the expertise, knowledge, and skills to build their research, pedagogy, and curriculum in ways that reflect and enhance this commitment.
Responsibilities:
The College of Social Sciences and Humanities (CSSH) at Northeastern University invites applications and nominations for one or more faculty positions in Digital Humanities with a specialization in literary, cultural, rhetorical, or historical studies. These renewable positions will be at the rank of Teaching Professor (Assistant, Associate, or Full) or Professor of the Practice. Home departments include English; History; Cultures, Societies, and Global Studies; or other units within CSSH with other colleges, such as Arts, Media and Design (CAMD). The expected start date is Fall 2022.
We seek to strengthen and diversify our faculty and leadership in experiential and community engaged learning and digital humanities pedagogy, in support of Northeastern's graduate certificate program in Digital Humanities, as well as our undergraduate DH minor and DH combined major. Northeastern's robust digital humanities community draws on strong working relationships with the NULab, the library's Digital Scholarship Group, and the Boston Research Center. Teaching Professors have clear promotional paths, full participation in faculty governance, and a focus on teaching and teaching-related project development. Professor of the Practice is a role designed for accomplished practitioners who have been working in relevant contexts such as libraries, museums, software development organizations, funding agencies, non-profits, cultural heritage organizations, and digital humanities centers. For both positions, we welcome applications from across digital humanities domains, and we value research, praxis, and leadership experience outside of academia. Successful applicants will have the ability to initiate and lead substantive research projects, design innovative curricula, engage with practitioners and communities outside of the academy, and contribute to strategic planning around experiential learning in digital humanities. We are particularly interested in candidates who explore the critical and cultural significance of tools and methods in the context of questions of race, gender, sexuality, and politics.
We seek candidates who are committed to building an inclusive and diverse community of students, faculty, and staff, and we especially encourage applications from scholars who have been and remain underrepresented or marginalized in the field of digital humanities - including but not limited to scholars of color, women, LGBTQ+ people, individuals with disabilities and applicants from lower-income and first-generation academic backgrounds.
Qualifications:
Candidates must have a PhD or equivalent terminal degree such as an EdD, MFA, MLS, or MLIS by the start date of the appointment and a commitment to teaching excellence. Outstanding candidates at the rank of Associate Teaching Professor and above will require a record of scholarship, expertise and/or teaching excellence commensurate with rank.
Documents to Submit:
Applicants will submit a CV and a statement on teaching (and research, as applicable) that describes how the candidate's work engages with issues of diversity and social justice and provides links to any digital work. Please also be prepared to provide the names of three references.
Please address nominations and inquiries about the position to Professor Julia Flanders, at j.flanders@northeastern.edu. Review of applications will begin March 28, 2022 and will continue until the position is filled. For fullest consideration, application materials should be submitted by April 18.
