CENTENNIAL CENTER SUMMARY:

Established in 2008 in honor of the William Smith centennial year, the Centennial Center specializes in leadership, entrepreneurship and innovation. Originally rooted in leadership education, the Centennial Center offers applied learning and academic enrichment in all three areas to the Hobart and William Smith community.

The Centennial Center is deeply invested in developing leaders who are innovative problem-solvers in a myriad of contexts. With programming that includes the Youth Leadership College, Centennial Scholars and the Steve Cohen 67 Leadership Case Competition, students benefit from our signature model of Leading Self, Leading Others and Leadership in Action.

Along side our leadership offerings, the Centennial Center also designs entrepreneurial programming that supports students from idea generation to venture implementation. A menu that consists of the Michael '59 and Ellen 60 IdeaLab, The Todd Feldman '89 and Family Pitch contest, the HWS Hackathon, and the Summer Sandbox offer compelling environments and elite level training in entrepreneurial concepts to student entrepreneurial leaders.

Collectively, the Centennial Center is staffed by a group of educators that are dedicated to furthering leadership, entrepreneurship and innovation on campus both inside and outside of the classroom. Summary:

The Associate Director of the Centennial Center will teach leadership courses, mentor students and develop contend. In addition to teaching one course a semester, the Associate Director will be responsible for developing, marketing and organizing co-curricular programming for HWS students on behalf of the Center. Last, the Associate Director will be responsible for administrative items such as tracking budget, event details and supervising student workers.

Essential Responsibilities:

Coordination of Co-Curricular Programs (50%)

• The Associate Director will schedule, plan, and implement the HWS Hackathon. Responsibilities include: developing content for this two-day event dedicated to social innovation; developing a Hackathon-worthy topic and engaging in research related to the issue; identifying and securing speakers and judges; and marketing to students and developing event materials with Communications.
• The Associate Director will oversee the Youth Leadership College Program. Responsibilities include: selecting and overseeing student facilitators for Youth Leadership College; serving as a liaison with the Geneva City School District; and planning a final event for parents and students.
• The Associate Director is charged with the oversight of Centennial Center's Fellowships and Scholar's programs. Responsibilities include: advertising; developing and submitting application materials; interviewing and selection; mentoring and oversight of Fellows and Scholars; and tracking outcomes and collaborating with admissions to develop the Centennial Scholars program for incoming students
• The Associate Direct will organize the Steven L. Cohen '67 Leadership Case Competition. Responsibilities include: marketing to students; identifying selection committee members and judges; evaluating student submissions; and helping to plan the final event where judges will award prizes to student finalists.
• The Associate Director will support The Todd Feldman '89 and Family Pitch contest. Responsibilities include: event planning; student mentorship; and coordination with B&G, Sodexo, Communications and colleagues across campus.
• The Associate Director will help facilitate the Summer Leadership Challenge, a pre-college program for high school juniors and seniors over the summer. This two-week summer experience will allow high students to earn college credit and also experience leadership learning outside of the classroom. Throughout the year, the Associate Director will assist with marketing, scheduling, staffing and content development.
• The Associate Director would serve as a resource and mentor for students enrolled in programming. As part of this responsibility, the Associate Director would assist students in developing a plan for program completion at various check-points throughout the year.
• The Associate Director would develop assessment and evaluation systems for co-curricular programs by utilizing tools to track learning outcomes and student progress.

Teaching Leadership Classes (30%)

• The Associate Director would teach two leadership classes per academic year. Courses could include Leadership Theory, Effective Communication for Leaders or Leadership and Innovation. This is a staff position with teaching responsibilities. Teaching responsibilities include: facilitating discussions; creating interactive assignments; and developing a pedagogical philosophy that cultivates student learning.
• The Associate Director would cultivate leadership roles both on campus and in the community for students completing the capstone internship requirement for Leadership Studies minor. Several roles are created through the Center, partnerships with other campus offices and other external organizations.

Administrative (20%)

• The Associate Director is responsible for the marketing and outreach for Centennial Center's programming and initiatives. This includes developing and implementing a plan to market the Centennial Center to diverse constituents, author content for publicity materials and maintain the website along with all social media accounts.

• The Associate Director is responsible for tracking budgets, submitting items to the Business Office and reporting out yearly. Additionally, the Associate Director will support efforts to streamline office management by helping construct the yearly calendar and posting applications and events to our campus portal.
• The Associate Director is responsible for event planning for all programming which includes booking spaces, working with Communications for printed materials, organizing details and executing program plans.
• The Associate Director is also responsible for creating and innovating new programming, keeping current on Leadership Studies literature and practice, developing relationships with campus and community constituents, supporting programs for Entrepreneurship and Innovation, representing the Centennial Center on Admissions panels, presenting to the Advisory Board, facilitating leadership workshops and training for broader HWS community and collaborating across campus to meet the mission of the institution.

Other Information:

This is a full-time, 12-month, benefits-eligible position. Normal campus office hours of work are 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. during the academic year with a possible shortened workweek during the scheduled summer hours. The role may require evening and weekend responsibilities. This position description is not all-inclusive, as other tasks or responsibilities may be assigned.



Qualifications

• Masters degree in relevant area related to leadership is required. A doctorate (or other related terminal) degree is preferred.
• Three to five years of experience that can be applied to an educational environment is also required.
• A member of a team of professionals, the Associate director would be an energetic, passionate individual who can contribute to a collaborative working environment.
• A strong desire to teach student leaders, develop compelling programs, organize applied learning activities and cultivate relationships on campus and within the community is necessary.
• Discretion and sound judgment are required in dealing with students, faculty, administrators, parents, and alums. An ability to work as a team member to build strong working relationships across campus and in the broader community is necessary.
• The successful candidate will have advanced computer literacy and knowledge of various office practices and procedures, budget management, and be competent in managing social media marketing.
• Requires strong interpersonal skills, excellent verbal and written communications skills, and the ability to work unsupervised as well as part of a team.
• Must be well organized and have the ability to multitask and meet deadlines.
• Attention to detail is imperative.
• Creativity, resourcefulness, and the capacity to take initiative are important.
• Possess strong communication skills and be willing to take initiative
• Strong customer service orientation; positive, helpful, resourceful
• Demonstrate an awareness of and sensitivity to unique social, cultural, and economic circumstances of others
