Description of Department: The purpose of the Educational Opportunity Program is to fulfill New York State's commitment to provide access to higher education for economically disadvantaged students who possessed the potential to succeed in college, but whose academic preparation in high school has not fully prepared them to pursue college education successfully. The primary mission of the EOP is to facilitate the recruitment, enrollment, retention, and graduation of these students. This is accomplished by providing EOP students with an array of educationally related support services and opportunities. Applicants for EOP consideration must also be financially eligible for the program according to the New York State EOP financial eligibility guidelines.
The Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) at the State University of New York at Oswego invites applicants to fill a full time Academic Planning Counselor position.

Description of Responsibilities:
- Provide academic, social, career and graduate school advising to EOP students and monitor student progress. Areas of advisement include, but are not limited to: academic advising; course selection and registration for majors and undeclared EOP students; transition to college; financial aid concerns; career and graduate school counseling; advocacy; referrals to appropriate campus services and outside agencies as needed
- Assist in the development, implementation and evaluation of the EOP summer program. Duties include Peer Leader selection, providing specialized workshops and/or programs for students, instruction of summer program courses and collaboration with other SUNY Oswego offices
- Monitor and advise EOP students on academic probation
- Assist in the EOP student admission process
- Identify and provide additional programs, workshops and resources specific to student needs and concerns
- Assist in the collection of semester evaluation and assessment of programmatic courses and programs
- Engage in ongoing assessment activities and implementation of recommendations to improve services to students
- Design, teach and assess sections of first year seminars, introduction to college and academic recovery courses as assigned
- Represent and serve as a liaison for EOP in campus wide committee and programs as assigned
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree by time of appointment
- Experience working with historically academically and economically disadvantaged students including first generation college students
- Knowledge of student retention and persistence initiatives and strategies
- Demonstrated involvement with student program development
- Experience working with diversity issues/diverse students/ multicultural environments
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master's degree in Higher Education, Student Affairs, Counseling, or related field
- Professional experience with EOP, HEOP, TRIO, CSTEP or other Opportunity programs (includes graduate assistantship or fellowship experience)
- Experience with academic summer enrichment programs (i.e. Upward Bound, Summer Bridge)
- Experience with data collection and assessment
- Knowledge of and familiarity with Degree Works, Starfish Early Alert and Banner Student Information systems
- Demonstrated ability to plan and prioritize work tasks
- Demonstrated computer literacy with proficiency in software systems that include Microsoft Office Suite and Google Workspace
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Strong problem-solving skills
