The Department of Social Work, Criminal Justice and Sociology at Juniata College, a highly ranked, national liberal arts college of 1,400 students located in the scenic Allegheny Mountains of Central Pennsylvania, seeks candidates for an Assistant Professor of Criminal Justice, Sociology or Social Work, depending on qualifications, to begin in August of 2021. The Criminal Justice Program at Juniata College is embedded in a multidisciplinary department that includes Social Work, Criminal Justice and Sociology. The department's multidisciplinary perspective provides a unique opportunity for shared teaching and scholarship and a broad focus on holistic approaches to juvenile and adult justice. 

This position will begin as a two-year, fixed term position. With successful performance, a multi-year fixed term contract will follow. This is not currently a tenure track position, but there is a potential that it will become one in the future.

Course load will include 21 credit hours per year assigned from among the following possibilities: Introduction to Criminal Justice; Drugs and Society; Policing; Social Deviance and Criminology; Corrections; and Juvenile Justice. Teaching assignments may also include courses in Sociology and/or Social Work, depending on the candidate's credentials and experience. The successful candidate will also develop, coordinate and supervise criminal justice internships, student research, and community engagement opportunities. Opportunities exist to develop new courses in the candidate's preferred areas of interest within criminal justice.

Candidates must have a Ph.D. in Criminal Justice, Criminology, Sociology, or a related discipline, or an MSW in Social Work with practice and/or research experience in the criminal justice system. While not required, preference will be given to candidates with 3 years of teaching experience in their field; a strong commitment to and demonstrated excellence in undergraduate teaching; demonstrated skills in program evaluation and leadership with the expectation of assuming leadership of our Criminal Justice Program; and evidence of continuing professional development. 

The successful candidate will possess a strong commitment to anti-racism and social justice along with a broad, theoretically diverse approach to criminal justice studies. Experience with teaching and advising in a liberal arts environment and a flexible attitude toward teaching assignments are highly desirable.
