Guided by a mission to “inspire boys of promise to become young men who lead and serve,” US is deeply committed to the well-being of boys and prides itself on being a supportive, diverse and inclusive community where “each boy is known and loved.” The school’s motto of Responsibility, Loyalty, Consideration is honored, respected, and prominent in the daily life of all members of the school community. University School currently enrolls 860 students in grades K-12 on two campuses, Shaker Heights (K-8) and Hunting Valley (9-12 on 221 acres), 5.5 miles apart and East of downtown Cleveland. A new Junior Kindergarten program was launched in the fall of 2018. The campuses are extremely attractive and well maintained with a broad array of indoor and outdoor learning spaces ideally suited to the needs of boys. The faculty of University School numbers 137, 118 of whom have master's degrees, 12 have doctorate degrees, three have J.D.s, and... one has a M.D. University School believes that students learn their most formative and enduring lessons through exposure to and experience with a broad range of perspectives. The school recruits and supports faculty whose backgrounds and training bring local, national, and international perspectives to the school. US admits and supports students who represent economically, culturally, and racially diverse communities within Northeast Ohio. $4.5 million of need-based financial assistance is awarded annually. Students have broad ranging opportunities to explore their talents and develop their skills in new contexts, in academics, athletics, and the arts. Each student is encouraged to discover both his responsibility to others and his purpose in the world. Over the past 128 years, University School has been led by a dedicated, loyal, and generous Board of Trustees, most of whom are alumni. The school enjoys truly superb facilities created largely by a culture of philanthropy that has been consistently cultivated since the school’s founding. With an operating budget of $28 million and an endowment of $88 million, University School enjoys excellent financial health.
