Tandem Friends School, a co-ed, Quaker, 5th-12th grade independent day school in Charlottesville, Virginia, has an opening for a middle school history teacher to be a leave replacement for several months during the fall semester of the 2022-2023 school year. This position will involve teaching two sections each of 7th and 8th grade history. The 7th grade history course is a general survey of United States History, from exploration through the early 20th century. In 8th grade, Modern World History allows students to focus on the major global events of the 20th century through to the present.
The ideal candidate will possess:
- at least 3 years of experience teaching adolescents
- a strong understanding of the developmental needs of students,
- experience with student-centered teaching and learning practices,
- experience with developing curricula, especially with a DEI lens
- a demonstrated ability to work with a diversity of student backgrounds and learning styles,
- and an eagerness to partner with a dynamic team of colleagues in the day-to-day activities of the school.
Tandem Friends seeks teachers who bring diverse skills, knowledge and interests; a willingness to learn new things; and an appreciation for collaboration with students. At TFS, all teachers are active community members who share in the general support and care of the school community, serve as student advisors, and collaboratively lead service learning and overnight trips among other activities.
While this position is a short-term leave replacement, there may be the possibility of full-year employment as a tutor in our Learning Resource Center.
Tandem Friends School aspires to be an equitable and inclusive school community. The school welcomes applications from candidates who will contribute to an atmosphere in which all are valued and supported. Qualified candidates hold a Bachelor’s degree; a Master's degree is preferred. People of color and members of other underrepresented groups are encouraged to apply. Interested applicants should submit a cover letter, resume and references to middleschoolteacherpositions@tandemfs.org.
