The Rowan University School of Veterinary Medicine (RUSVM) invites applications for a full-time faculty position (tenure-track faculty) for the role of Director of Veterinary Clinical Skills Program. The selected candidate must have a commitment to advancing veterinary education through providing excellence and innovation in clinical skills teaching, learning, and assessment. Applicants must demonstrate leadership, strong collaborative efforts, and be capable of positive, clear and effective communication. Applicants must have a DVM or equivalent degree. A Master’s or PhD degree is desirable, but not essential. Applicants must have previous experience in veterinary practice and would also benefit from background in clinical teaching, adult education, and assessment. Prior academic program administration is an asset.

The successful candidate will join the School of Veterinary Medicine Professional Program team led by the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs in collaboration with the Associate Dean of Student Affairs and Strategic Enrollment Management to support the mission of the School. The successful candidate will be expected to lead the development of a comprehensive newly formed clinical skills program for students in the first through fourth years of the DVM program.

The Director will be expected to contribute to the School’s American Veterinary Medical Association accreditation and strategic planning initiatives related to the implementation, delivery and outcomes assessment of teaching and learning. The Director will oversee the daily delivery of the program while also teaching in the skills sessions and working directly with learners. The person will play a key role in helping to define and implement the didactic and hands-on clinical and technical skills curriculum, organizing lab sessions, coordinating with faculty to develop and deliver clinical skills content, and help to deliver the program itself. The Director will be expected to foster interdisciplinary and inter-professional collaborations. The person will focus on evidence-based teaching methods, while contributing to educational research, and presenting at regional and national meetings where appropriate. The Director will be responsible for recruiting, training, and supervising staff members as well as encouraging their professional development, instruction and overseeing performance management.

The Director will ensure the clinical skills curriculum is consistent with and supportive of our mission to develop day-one, practice ready veterinarians who are competent, confident and career-ready veterinarians who are prepared to practice broadly across the spectrum of care and serve an economically diverse clientele while enjoying a professionally satisfying and financially sustainable career.

Essential Role and Position Responsibilities:

• Design a robust veterinary skills curriculum that includes the necessary technical and professional skills needed to educate students to be truly “Day One Ready” veterinarians at graduation who have all the essential skills as well as the tools to develop their skills throughout their long, successful, and satisfying careers, as well as serving an integral role in development of the overall veterinary curriculum.
• Develop sound, evidence-based and effective approaches to teaching professional skills as well as technical skills.
• Oversee the daily delivery of the programs while also teaching in the lecture and skills sessions and working directly with learners.
• Define and implement the hands-on clinical and technical skills curriculum, organizing lab sessions, coordinating with faculty to develop and deliver clinical skills content, and help to deliver the program itself.
• Contribute to educational research, and present at regional and national meetings where appropriate.
• Responsible for recruiting, training, and supervising the technical staff members as well as encouraging their professional development, instruction and overseeing performance management.
• Develop novel clinical skills educational models.
• Supervise direct-report staff within the clinical skills division.

 Required Qualifications for the position include (12 month position):

• DVM (or equivalent degree) from an AVMA-Accredited institution required with a preference for an MS or PhD in a related field
• Experience in higher education administration, academic program management, curricular development, and clinical sciences strongly preferred
• An established record of excellence in teaching, scholarship, and service
• Evidence of interdisciplinary, collaborative leadership and partnerships with external agencies
• Outstanding leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills
• Experience with strategic planning and an understanding of faculty needs with a view toward enhancing pedagogy, growth and clinical collaboration
• Demonstrated commitment to advancing diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice.
• An understanding of the intersection of teaching, research, outreach, and patient care
• Proven commitment to and knowledge of shared governance
• Ability to lead teams, communicate with multiple and diverse audiences and individuals, and complete tasks in a complex organizational environment
• Ability to inspire others to high levels of performance and foster collaboration and trust

• Applicants must have previous experience in general veterinary practice and would also benefit from background in clinical teaching, adult education, and assessment
• Familiarity with instructional technology, highly preferred
