Job Summary: The Laboratory Coordinator is responsible for oversight of the day-to-day operations of a science or research lab(s).
Additional Department Summary: This position will serve as a technical resource within the College of Engineering to work with various faculty, staff, students, and research centers in chemical, biological, and environmental areas. The Lab coordinator is responsible for regular maintenance of all equipment in teaching and shared research laboratories of assigned areas, including instrumentation of pilot-scale units. The Lab Coordinator is also responsible for scheduling service calls for analytical instruments under service contracts and performing regular maintenance on other analytical tools in assigned areas. In addition, the Lab Coordinator will work under faculty guidelines to assist in the design, upgrade, revamp, and construction of new test stands or lab experiments with technology upgrades such as computer interfaces and computer-based data acquisition and process control. Must also assist with developing and maintaining custom-made computer-based instrumentation, control logic subroutines, and interfaces in LabVIEW that maintain the cutting-edge character of the labs. In addition, coordinate with TAs the implementation of safety protocols, hazard mitigation strategies, and continuity of teaching and research. Mitigation strategies include activities such as: responding to equipment failures & faults; training TAs & faculty on current standard operating procedures of equipment, instrumentation, and test stands; updating web-based training and documentation site such as SharePoint; helping to identify job hazards as well as maintaining safe operating conditions in the lab; and interfacing with facilities to secure proper operation of utilities such as steam, DI water, compressed dry air, and hot water. As needed, the lab coordinator will also support sponsored research activities and industry-sponsored projects such as senior design, ChemE Car, and tours.
Required Department Minimum Qualifications: Master's degree; OR Bachelor's degree and two (2) years of experience with research laboratory equipment, hardware, software, operation, maintenance, and/or supplies is required (student, graduate assistant, or intern experience may be considered if student experience is detailed in the employment section on the application).
Skills and Knowledge: Experience with data collection software such as LabVIEW and computer-aided drafting (CAD) software is desirable. Working knowledge of multiple editing platforms and software packages. Knowledge of basic programming, networking, or system skills. Ability to communicate effectively with diverse students, faculty, and staff. Strong written and verbal communication skills and strong computer skills (Microsoft Office Suite). Ability to take the initiative and ownership of responsibilities, with strong organizational skills and a problem-solving mindset.
Preferred Qualifications: Extensive knowledge of some of the following applications: Microsoft Office, VBA, MassHunter, LabVIEW, and Solidworks. Hands-on experience with electrical and mechanical systems. Experience with pumps, compressors, valves, electrical equipment, piping & instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs). Familiarity with laboratory equipment used in engineering and the chemical sciences. Ability and willingness to independently learn new systems and evolve with technological advances. Ability to work well independently and within a team environment.
