Since its establishment in 1941, the Sidney and Lois Eskenazi Museum of Art has grown from a small university teaching collection into one of the foremost university art museums in the country. A preeminent teaching museum, its internationally acclaimed collection, ranging from ancient gold jewelry and African masks to paintings by Claude Monet and Pablo Picasso, includes more than 45,000 objects representing nearly every art-producing culture throughout history. The Eskenazi Museum of Art recently completed a $30 million renovation of its acclaimed I.M. Pei designed building. The newly renovated museum will be an enhanced teaching resources for Indiana University and southern Indiana. Positioning the institution as a premier teaching museum requires breakthrough programming, experiences, and storytelling that advances its mission in powerful ways.
Job Summary
Department-Specific Responsibilities
- Acts as the IU Eskenazi Museum of Art's leader in creating and coordinating the museum's educational public experiences for Indiana University and the broader southern Indiana communities.
- Designs, plans, and executes the museum's public programs, including recurring events (such as Visiting Artist talks, First Thursdays, and Social Saturdays), as well as new programs that reflect museum priorities as established by the museum's leadership. Programs, including in-person, online, and hybrid, will emphasize participation in university and community collaborations and will be designed to build audiences for the museum.
- Provides in-person and/or online support for programs (including evenings and weekends), maintains up-to-date knowledge of best practices related to museum event programming, and follows those practices to devise and administer regular participant evaluation of programming.
- Manages the daily operations of the public experiences program.
- Develops and manages public experience budget.
- Assists the development department in undertaking the cultivation and stewardship of individual donors, proposals, and annual reports in support of public experiences.
- Collaborates closely with the chair of education on priorities, planning, and budgeting for public audiences at the museum, while also working with the senior leadership team and other museum staff.
General Responsibilities
- Plans a variety of recurring and ad hoc events for the university and oversees budgets, vendor contracts, transportation, catering, signage, equipment, technology, and other event components. Coordinates event activities prior to and on the day of events.
- Consults with internal and external constituencies to plan event timelines and specifications and negotiates the terms of agreements and contracts.
- Works closely with vendors and staff to ensure goods and services arrive timely and in acceptable condition for events.
- Interfaces with media and/or marketing and communications representatives regarding calendar of events and event publicity.
- Tracks and analyzes event metrics, such as attendance, participant feedback, and expenses; monitors effectiveness and return of investment; tracks suggested event improvements for future implementation in recurring events.
- Ensures events adhere to university guidelines and policies and event contracts, agreements, and specifications.
- May make procedural and policy recommendations to improve operational efficiency.
- May provide guidance to lower-level Event Services Specialists; may delegate administrative tasks to Event Services Coordinators.
Qualifications
EDUCATION
Required
Bachelor's degree in business, finance, public administration, or a related field.
Preferred
- Bachelor's degree in relevant humanities or education-related field.
- Master's degree.
WORK EXPERIENCE
Required
2 years in events, hospitality, or a related field.
Preferred
- 2 years of experience organizing and implementing programming in an art museum or similar setting.
Combinations of related education and experience may be considered.

Working Conditions / Demands
This role regularly requires the ability to effectively communicate. This role frequently requires the ability to handle equipment. This role frequently requires the ability to remain stationary and ascend/descend ladders/stairs. This role requires the ability to move objects weighing up to 40 pounds. The role requires the ability to work while remaining stationary for up to 10 hours and have the ability to monitor events and respond quickly to the needs of clients, guests, and security. Ability to detect items in close proximity as well as far away; discern between colors; detect objects in peripheral space of self; discern items in detail; and to have good depth perception. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.
