About the Position:
The Dean of Students Office helps Titans reach higher by serving as an advocate for students, connecting them to appropriate university resources, and collaborating meaningfully with the campus community. We assist students in navigating the university and resolving educational, personal, and other concerns that impact the quality of their Titan experience. We are seeking an exceptional individual to join our team as the Director of Basic Needs Services. The ideal candidate in this role should have a positive attitude, an active, energetic mind, and a leadership style that is characterized by highly ethical practices and a commitment to diversity, openness, flexibility, integrity, and kindness.
The Director of Basic Needs Services provides leadership for the design, build, and execution of a vision for basic needs services at Cal State Fullerton. Under the guidance of the Associate Dean of Students, the Director of the Basic Needs Services is responsible for the management of comprehensive programs and support services designed to reduce food, housing, and financial insecurity. The Director manages the Basic Needs Center and administers non-clinical case management of food, temporary housing, and grant requests. Creates and maintains strong partnerships with campus and community stakeholders. Oversees the department's budget and is responsible for annual budget requests, allocations, and monitoring different department accounts. Manages professional staff and student staff and has direct oversight of recruitment, professional development, onboarding, and team building. Provides oversight on assessment and evaluation of programs and services. Develops collaborative relationships with faculty, staff, and campus departments to ensure Basic Needs Services supports student learning, the university's mission, and the University' and Student Affairs strategic plans. The Director will represent Cal State Fullerton on CSU system-wide basic needs initiatives, which includes, but is not limited to, system-wide meetings, basic needs conferences, and the management of system-wide grant opportunities. In addition, the Director will work with University Advancement on donor stewardship, government/community relations, and fundraising. Represents Basic Needs Services across campus and within the Division of Student Affairs. Performs other related duties as assigned by the Associate Dean of Students. Other Duties as assigned.
Essential Qualifications:
Masters Degree from an accredited college or university in Student Affairs, Student Development, Educational Leadership, Social Work, or a related field. Three years of professional student services work experience including case management, program assessment, budget and personnel management. Demonstrated ability to analyze, prioritize, and respond to complex and sensitive situations using sound judgement and political acumen.
Demonstrated knowledge, experience, and competency in the areas of basic needs, relevant programming, services and implementation. Demonstrated experience with outreach and communications in a higher education setting. Experience with website design and maintenance, social media management and engagement strategies. Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain cooperative relationships with campus and community stakeholders through a student-centered lens. Demonstrated skills in decision making, facilitation, collaboration, project management and fiscal planning.
Experience working with highly visible areas within division or organization and high expectations regarding professional conduct. Demonstrated commitment to issues of diversity, inclusion, equity, and justice. Exceptional oral and written communication skills, as well as strong organizational skills and follow-through. A clear understanding of, or the ability to understand, higher education issues and nuances. Ability to work collaboratively as a member of a team in a high-volume, fast-paced, highly visible environment is essential.
A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily and is required for employment. CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.
Preferred Qualifications:
Three to five years direct experience working with and providing intervention to college students who lack basic needs support especially food and housing insecurity. Experience with complex case management and community resources. Demonstrated understanding of the academic culture within and knowledge of relevant issues affecting public four-year institutions. Experience demonstrating excellent counseling, communication, critical thinking, negotiation, and conflict-management skills. Experience with developing and maintaining partnerships with campus and community-based agencies and organizations that support underserved populations.
