Summary of Position: | Instructors are needed in geography to cover courses on a semester-by-semester basis. Responsibilities include teaching general education courses as well as courses that deliver key content for Geography Education, History Education, Social Studies Education, and Political Science programs. Must be able to teach Map Analysis and Introduction to GIS (with emphasis on Social Science application), Cultural Geography/World Regional Geography, and/or Physical Geography/Weather and Climate, per department needs. One or more applicants may be hired as needed to teach classes on a semester-by-semester basis. This posting is being used for face to face and/or online instruction. However, the candidate selected for the position must reside in Michigan after acceptance of employment. | |

Additional Education/Experiences to be Considered: | Ph.D. in Geography. Higher education teaching experience. Ability to teach Map Analysis and Introduction to GIS (with emphasis on Social Science application), as well as additional courses in Human Geography/World Regional Geography or Physical Geography/Climate, per department needs. Experience working with diverse populations of students. Evidence of GIS-based research experience. | |
Essential Duties/Responsibilities: | Teach general education and program-required courses in Introductory GIS for Social Applications, Map Analysis, World Regional Geography, Cultural Geography, Physical Geography, Weather and Climate and/or others as needed and based on candidate capabilities and department needs. Provide up-to-date coursework and course-related materials. Maintain a safe and engaging learning environment. Keep office hours at times convenient for students. Meet with classes at their scheduled times. Effective teaching by way of good communication, assessment of student learning, and adaptation to various levels of student preparation. Carry out teaching and professional development responsibilities under the supervision of the Social Sciences Department Chair and the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences (or their designee). Responsibilities include maintaining the confidentiality of designated information and performing duties in compliance with applicable policies and procedures. Faculty members also have professional responsibilities which may include but are limited to: keeping regular posted office hours (which are scheduled at times convenient for students), and participation in traditional functions which have academic significance (ex. reporting initial student participation data and submitting final grades on time). Faculty members may be required to teach off-campus or in an on-line environment. Demonstrates an understanding of diversity, equity, and inclusion, especially in working relationships with students, faculty, staff and community members. Marginal Duties/Responsibilities: | ||
Skills and Abilities: | Ability to travel to teaching assignments and events during both day and evening hours. Ability to provide structured learning experiences utilizing official course learning outcomes. Ability to teach theory and methods of map design, map use and analysis, map symbolization, and graphic communication concepts. Ability to work effectively in an interdisciplinary team setting. Ability to work effectively with diverse groups. Able to utilize ArcMap/Arc GIS and effectively instruct students in the usage of this software. Effective interpersonal skills. Demonstrated commitment, experience and understanding for diversity, equity, and inclusion. | |
