Qualifications:
The Department of Geography and Environmental Studies at CSUN welcomes applications from individuals trained in Geospatial Science and Technology, and related geospatial technologies, with an area of focus in Physical and Environmental Geography. We seek a qualified candidate with a Ph.D. in Geography, or related cognate field, from an accredited university. Areas of expertise particularly desired include climatology, hydrology, or landscape change. Priority will be given to candidates with expertise in advanced applications of geospatial technologies related to physical and environmental geography including spatial modeling, remote sensing, machine learning, and geospatial data science and statistics. Familiarity with the use of drones and UAV technologies and a working knowledge of proprietary and open-source software packages are also desired. Grant-writing experience and success are also highly desirable.
Candidates should have demonstrated excellence or potential for excellence in teaching, scholarly research, and professional and community service.
Preference will be given to candidates who can develop projects based in Southern California and engage in fieldwork with geography students with a demonstrated commitment to student success. Preference will also be given to applicants who have multiple professional experiences with diverse student populations and community populations and who can demonstrate a commitment to working with diverse community and student populations.
CSUN is a Learning-Centered University. The candidate will be expected to take an active role in bringing innovation and creativity to the development of our undergraduate and graduate programs. The successful candidate will be expected to join faculty and staff in a commitment to active learning, to the assessment of learning outcomes, and to multiple pathways that enable students to graduate.
At time of appointment, the successful candidate, if not a U.S. citizen, must have authorization from the Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services to work in the United States.

Responsibilities:
Teaching responsibilities will include our upper-division courses and any of our graduate courses in the candidate's area of expertise. Teaching lower- and upper-division GIS courses may be required. In addition, candidates may be expected to teach lower- and upper-division physical/environmental geography courses such as coursework in climate science, geomorphology, or water resources. Successful applicants will also be encouraged to develop new upper-level coursework in their area of expertise. Normal teaching load is 12 units per semester, with opportunities for reduction in teaching load for funded research. There will be a reduced teaching load during the first two years of appointment. We seek a faculty member who will involve students in field work, data analysis, and research projects, who will mentor students in their senior thesis and master's degree research, and generally prepare students for careers in the Geospatial Science profession. The successful candidate will also be expected to contribute to our graduate programs in Geospatial Science and Physical/Environmental Geography, advise students, contribute to department, college, and university committees, participate in professional conferences, publish in peer-reviewed journals, and seek external grants.
The successful candidate will be held to the standards and requirements of the college and department in which he/she is housed for recommending tenure and promotion.
