Description
Hobart and William Smith Colleges seek applicants for the position of debate coach. This position begins under the supervision of the Director of Debate, with the potential for transitioning to a new head coach role and assuming primary control of the Debate Team in the coming years. The HWS Debate Team is dedicated to promoting debate at the highest level. We promote a culture of excellence, of critical thought and of strong teamwork. Our members are confident public speakers who continually hone their analytic and rhetorical skills to master the art of persuasion. The HWS Debate Team began just 18 years ago and it has been quite successful. In addition to winning numerous regional tournaments, we have broken at Worlds in Manila (2012) and Korea (2021), made it to semis at Hart House and Yale, won the Northeast regional championships twice and won the US National BP Championships.
Essential Responsibilities:
- Facilitate 3 Debate Team practices each week to include speaking/presentation drills, preparation skills, debating strategy, content workshops, practice rounds, etc.
- Coordinate the Debate Team's registration and travel arrangements to local and more distant tournaments, and supervise their safety while attending events and traveling off-campus. (Approximately 15 weekend debate tournaments each year, pre-Covid).
- Accompany debate team members at the World Universities Debating Championships (annually).
- Prepare and teach two sections (one per semester) of public speaking (mainly for non-debaters).
- Play a primary role in running two tournaments each year, a large fall BP tournament (e.g., HWS IV or NAUDC), and the HWS International Round Robin in the spring semester.
- Serve as a Teaching Assistant (TA) for Debating Public Policy (PHIL 158) during the spring semester only.
- Provide individual coaching and mentoring of debate team members to improve on their skills (videotaping and reviewing debate, developing individualized strategies for improvement, etc.).
- Organize on-campus public debating events each semester (e.g., workshops/scrimmages with local schools, the Finger Lakes Cup Challenge Debate, a life raft debate).
- Serve as a debate team judge or event organizer as requested at tournaments or other events.
- Demonstrate knowledge for the Colleges' educational philosophy and mission.
- Demonstrate an awareness of and sensitivity to unique social, cultural, and economic circumstances.
- Performs other related duties as required.
Additional Responsibilities:
- Work to develop outreach programs to high school debate leagues, including Urban Debate Leagues.
- Recruit domestic and international high school debaters to apply to and attend HWS, including interviewing them for debate scholarships.
- Work with HWS students and others in the international debating community to innovate and make progress on debating theory and practice (e.g. - tournament design, judging norms, debate strategy, equity policy, etc.).
- Meet with faculty members interested in using debate as a classroom activity.
- Promote the development of team case file and strategy materials .
- Teach other courses in the coach's area of expertise.
Other Information:
This is a full-time temporary (August 15th 2022- May 14th, 2023), 9-month, benefits-eligible administrative exempt position. The position is located in Geneva, NY. This position description is not all-inclusive as other tasks or responsibilities may be assigned.
Qualifications
- A degree at the Master's level is preferred, but a Bachelors degree will be considered.
- This position requires driving Debate Team members to events. A valid drivers license and clean driving record is required. Applicants should be comfortable driving a 12-15 passenger van and will need to pass a basic van driving test given by HWS.
- Qualified candidates will have experience teaching and coaching debate and public speaking.
Substantial experience in WUDC (i.e., British Parliamentary) debating as a debater, judge and trainer is important to the position.
