Position Summary:
The Stern College Department of Chemistry is seeking a Lab Specialist who will be responsible for the administrative functioning of the laboratories which includes acting as a liaison with professors to ensure labs are properly set for classes. Teaching of up to two sections per semester of General Chemistry or Organic chemistry laboratory under the supervision of the lab coordinator. The laboratory specialist must be familiar with all laboratory courses, including General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, and Biochemistry and cover them as needed.
Position Responsibilities:
- Learn, follow, and oversee safety rules and regulations. Act as departmental liaison with the university's Chief Safety Officer.
- Be familiar with chemical waste management and disposal
- Responsible for all lab inventory of chemicals, equipment and supplies; arrange for purchase, replacement and/or repair, etc.
- Assist in supervising the proper operation of the laboratory computers and interact with IT as needed.
- Assist with the development of lab curricula.
- Assist faculty in appropriate areas of departmental tasks including developing and trying out new student experiments and administering and proctoring exams.
- Assist faculty with research.
- Contact the appropriate persons or departments for needed services (such as facility management, housekeeping and others).
- Teach General Chemistry and Organic Chemistry laboratory sections working together with the lab coordinator, grading papers, meeting with students, etc.
- Available for flexible hours if needed
Experience & Educational Background:
- Bachelor's degree in Chemistry
- 2 years of related experience
- Master's Degree preferred
Skills & Competencies:
- Demonstrated history of service and teamwork
- Demonstrated teaching skills
- Good written and verbal communication skills
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs
- Knowledge of laboratory safety procedures
