Position Summary:
Yeshiva University seeks a curator to plan and coordinate the exhibition and installation of the Belz Collection focusing on Jewish art in the Belz Building of the uptown YU Wilf campus. The Belz Collection Curator will plan and manage the collection storage and exhibit, research and select artworks, write an interpretive script (text panels and labels), plan, coordinate and implement the display with specialist consultants and Yeshiva University Museum professionals' guidance; and plan and implement special opening and other events, working with Yeshiva University Museum (YUM) and across the University (academics, Marketing and Communications, Institutional Advancement, etc.).
This curator will concentrate on the Belz Collection installation on the Wilf Campus and will work collaboratively with the professional staff of YUM, located at 15 West 16th Street, to ensure opportunities for interdisciplinary engagement with the visual arts across University campuses. This position is funded for three years.
Position Responsibilities:
The Belz Collection Curator will:
- Serve as the primary staff person for the Belz collection, display, and storage installations
- Research and provide expertise on the collection items
- Select the artworks for display, pinpoint special works and needs, and plan for rotations or special opportunities
- Research, examine, identify and assess all artworks, coordinate with outside scholars and experts, YUM curators and others as needed
- Establish and/or improve and implement a collection recordkeeping system; work with YUM Collections Curator to assess, plan and implement
- Work with YUM Collections Curator and YU Risk Manager on insurance needs, protocols, implementing any specific recommendations
- Serve as the primary expert and author for the exhibition script (text panels, labels)
- Work with YUM education and curatorial staff to understand various audiences, interpretation strategies, potential and best approaches
- Work with YUM Interim Director and Associate Director of Administration and with YU Operations and key contractors on developing project goals, a work plan and schedule, budgeting, project and financial oversight, and management
- With guidance from YU Operations and YUM and their contacts and experience, assist with identifying and selecting contractors. Work cooperatively and efficiently with architect, specialist designers (exhibition, graphics, lighting etc.), specialist mount makers and art installers, etc. to plan and implement the exhibition and storage installations
- Work with YUM staff for guidance and discussion on museum practices, best approaches, vendor and supply sources, public outreach, and programming
- Plan and supervise the implementation and installation
- Work with various YU departments and staff on publicity, promotion, marketing, digital (YU and YUM websites, social media, etc.), and fostering intra-University and broad communal synergy and partnerships
- Plan and implement specialized public programming (in-person and online) -- tours, presentations, etc. for the opening events, for special opportunities, seasonal, etc.
- Work as a creative, scholarly, public-facing, and cooperative member of the University and YUM staff team
- Additional curatorial responsibilities as needed
Experience & Education Background:
- Graduate level academic training in a relevant field or fields, with interdisciplinary interests: art, art history, history, Jewish history, Jewish art, museum studies, etc.
- Museum experience
- Experience working with original artworks
Skills & Competencies:
- Familiarity with Jewish art, culture, and history
- Strong research skills
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Strong organizational skills
- Enjoys working as a team member and independently; positive attitude and collaborative approach
- Must possess outstanding attention to detail
