About the Position:
Diversity Initiatives and Resource Centers (DIRC) supports students by building communities that foster a sense of belonging, creating opportunities to engage in self-discovery and critical inquiry, and serving as a hub for resources in inclusive and affirming spaces. We create engagement opportunities that empower, educate, and activate students in the areas of social justice, equity, and anti-racism. We are seeking an exceptional individual to join our team as the African American Resource Center Coordinator (Student Services Professional III-Range A). The ideal candidate in this role should have a positive attitude and an active, energetic mind that is characterized by highly ethical practices and a commitment to diversity, openness, flexibility, integrity, and kindness.
The African American Resource Center is one of five identity-based centers in DIRC, the other centers are Asian Pacific American Resource Center, Latinx Community Resource Center, LGBT Queer Resource Center, and Titan Dreamers Resource Center. The AARC creates an Afro-centric, holistic environment that contributes to the full intellectual, social, and professional development of Black/African American students at CSUF. We offer programs and services aligned with the pillars of our community: Identity, Community, Consciousness, and Culture.
The Coordinator provides the overall administration and oversight of the African American Resource Center (AARC) at California State University, Fullerton. Under the general supervision of the Director of DIRC, the Coordinator will provide leadership and strategic planning for the AARC, which includes, but is not limited to student staff supervision and development, coalition building with campus and community stakeholders, coordination and implementation of program and services, evaluation and assessment of AARC programs, management of center budgets, and oversight of daily operations. The Coordinator will develop a strategic plan to enhance the Titan Experience for African American/Black students through programs, services, and collaborations with campus stakeholders (e.g., Black Student Union, African American Studies Department, Black Faculty & Staff Association, etc.). Designs and implements all programming and student engagement opportunities offered through the AARC including community building, identity development, and education programming; and create and implement large-scale AARC programming including an annual welcome event, end of year celebration, and Black History Month activities. Leads the development and implementation of the AARC Peer Mentor Program, including supervision and development with peer mentors and mentees networks and collaboration with other peer mentor programs in DIRC, and serve as a partner for the themed floor residential community in Housing and Residential Engagement. This position will work collaboratively with a wide variety of departments and partners across the university community to develop effective programs and services that complement the academic experience of students. As a team member within DIRC, the AARC Coordinator will assist with programs and initiatives throughout the department as needed. Other duties as assigned.
Essential Qualifications:
Bachelors degree or the equivalent from an accredited four-year college or university in a related field including or supplemented by upper division or graduate course work in counseling techniques, interviewing, and conflict resolution plus three years of professional student services work in the field. A masters degree from an accredited college or university in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work or a job-related field may be substituted for one year of professional experience. A doctoral degree from an accredited college or university and the appropriate internship or clinical training in a relevant field may be substituted for three years of the required professional experience.
Ability to plan, develop, coordinate, supervise, and organize programs and activities. Ability to interact with a diverse student population, faculty, staff, and the public. Ability to analyze complex situations accurately and adopt effective courses of action. Ability to advise students individually and in groups on complex student-related matters. Ability to complete assignments without detailed instructions. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with a variety of individuals. Possession of excellent verbal and written communication skills, as well as the ability to acquire knowledge of campus procedures, activities, and the overall organization.
A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily and is required for employment. CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.
Preferred Qualifications:
Masters degree from an accredited college or university in Higher Education or job-related field. Experience working with student organizations, as well as with program planning and implementation, training design, and student development program delivery. Experience directing highly visible areas. Experience planning and implementing co-curricular programs. Experience developing and maintaining collaborative partnerships with a variety of constituents. Experience working with multiple constituencies such as Black/African American students, students of color, LGBTQ, undocumented, and diverse community members. Prior large-scale programming experience, experience in or ability to develop and manage budgets, and experience in or ability to develop and oversee assessment efforts. Demonstrated knowledge, experience, and competency in the areas of diversity education, program development and implementation, student development, assessment and evaluation, and staff supervision. Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the unique issues that impact students within the Black diaspora. Ability to work with faculty and community partners. Ability to develop and facilitate a range of workshops and trainings related to diversity, leadership, and cultural competence. Ability to represent Diversity Initiatives and Resource Centers within the Identity and Belonging Cluster, across campus, and within the Division of Student Affairs. Demonstrated understanding of the academic culture within and knowledge of relevant issues affecting public four-year institutions.
