Job Description:
Responsibilities:
Serve as academic advisor for assigned caseload of advisees to support continued student success in planning, revising, and completing Liberal Arts degrees.
Design, develop, manage projects, events, activities and college policies and goals on advising, including planning, assessment, decision making and accountability for continuous improvement that enhances advising and student services within the College of Liberal Arts in the context of a Minority Serving Institution.
Serve as a resource within the college and to other units and departments at the university, leading in the proposal, design and implementation of outcomes for continuous improvement projects; actively contributing to a culture of continuous improvement at the college and university.
Propose, design and lead workshops to highlight and share innovative and best practices, techniques and strategies on student-focused advising in regular and active partnership with faculty within the college.
Plan, design and lead outreach activities for the College of Liberal Arts to develop community partnerships with diverse constituents and populations such as Community Colleges, area High Schools, community organizations, and populations such as transfer students, PSEO students, underserved groups, veterans.
Function as a creative and collaborative advising team member within, and representing, the College of Liberal Arts, while serving the needs of learners and contributing to innovative practices that support student success.
Provide a wide range of advising and degree planning services in person through phone and email in accordance with university, college, and professional standards.
Advocate for students' best interests.
Creatively apply a deep and broad knowledge of complex structural and institutional factors necessary to support students in developing, revising, and completing their degree plans; such factors include knowledge of university curriculum and evolving requirements, patterns of transfer equivalencies and opportunities, pathways (both transfer and guided learning) and requirements for advanced studies, financial aid programs, myriad support services for mental and emotional support, community engagement opportunities, and career development in the context of a minority serving institution.
Communicate effectively, promptly and creatively with multiple stakeholders, including students, faculty, advisors, and external audiences, by modelling appropriate intercultural interactions and professional decorum. Lead in designing content and implementing innovative training, education, practices, projects, and events for faculty, students, and university stakeholders on advising socially and culturally diverse populations on themes of social equity, historical disparity, systemic blindspots that are inversely related to continued student success.
Maintain and interpret appropriate and accurate documentation of student contacts and degree planning using the systems and procedures provided by the institution and the college.
Maintain and protect the confidentiality and privacy of student records as required by federal and state laws and university policies and procedures.
Maintain and interpret records for creatively developing projects to support goals of the college and university such as streamlining students by minors and majors to enhance efficiency of advising practices to ensure timely graduation.
Demonstrate and use working knowledge of appropriate technology tools and applicable Minnesota State policies as well as state and federal laws.
Engage in continuous professional development within the university to stay abreast of changing knowledge, trends and practices in university policies and procedures, academic programs, services and resources. This includes maintaining current knowledge of changing trends and best practices in the field and profession of advising practices.

Master's degree in a Liberal Arts/Humanities/Social Sciences discipline with a concentration in a related Liberal Arts/Social Sciences discipline such as Women and Gender Studies; Ethnic Studies; Race Studies; Multilingual Studies; Area or International Studies; plus one year of professional experience advising students from a diverse demography (first-generation; veteran; non-traditional; minority populations) in a higher education setting; Or Bachelor's degree in a Liberal Arts/Humanities/Social Sciences discipline with a concentration in a related Liberal Arts/Social Sciences discipline such asWomen and Gender Studies; Ethnic Studies and/or Race Studies; Multilingual Studies; Area or International Studies plus two years of professional experience advising students from a diverse demography(first-generation; veteran; non-traditional; minority populations) in a higher education setting.
Demonstrated knowledge of and ability to deeply and broadly apply a complex body of advising concepts, theories and practices, focused on approaches such as identity development with regard to race, gender, sexuality, class; privilege; bias and cultural competence theories; anti-racism theories, inclusion and equity theories, theoretically and conceptually grounded in continued student success.
Demonstrated ability to understand and communicate degree program requirements, pre-requisites, and graduation requirements sufficient to advise students in creating high-quality Liberal Arts degree plans and outcomes.
Demonstrated ability to understand and relate the work of multiple areas, including multiple academic departments, admissions, gateway services, the office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, financial aid, student services
Demonstrated ability to work effectively in student record and customer relationship management systems, including compliance with FERPA and similar regulations.
Basic computer skills including word processing and electronic communications

A record of academic preparation and professional development and experience related to serving non-traditional and diverse students, including academic preparation and experience on topics such as anti-racism and discrimination, systemic blind spots, and inclusion. Work experience with Liberal Arts/Humanities/Social Sciences studies or related disciplinary areas. Experience with project design, leadership and management, program assessment, or regional accreditation sufficient to independently manage small-to-medium projects Experience providing academic advising through telephone, email, social media, and video conferencing, or other innovative strategies in connecting with students in a prompt and regular manner.Other Requirements:

Benefits Info:
Salary: This is a Minnesota State University Association of Administrative and Service Faculty (
MSUAASF) Range C position with a salary range of $43,785 (minimum) to $75,840 (maximum). Salary is commensurate with education and experience, and is determined by the collective bargaining agreement between Minnesota State Colleges and Universities (Minnesota State) and the
MSUAASF organization.
