Description
The Media and Society Program at Hobart and William Smith Colleges invites applications for a tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor level in Global Digital Media beginning August 1, 2023. The teaching load is five courses per year, including our foundational course, Introduction to Media and Society, and courses in the field of global digital media. The global focus of this position advances the Media and Society Program's mission to incorporate a broad range of perspectives into the curriculum, and to cultivate critically engaged global citizens. Recent Ph.D.'s and those from underrepresented groups are strongly encouraged to apply.
The Media and Society Program is distinguished by its merging of history, theory, and practice across the curriculum, so we seek candidates who share that commitment in their teaching philosophy. The commitment to equity and social justice is a core value of the Media and Society Program. The candidate that is best suited to our program's mission is one who is devoted to inclusive pedagogy and whose work is concerned with the social implications of media: how digital technology contributes to, or helps override, imbalances of power. The successful candidate must articulate a desire to conduct research and teach at a small, residential, undergraduate college. Background
Founded as Hobart College for men and William Smith College for women, Hobart and William Smith Colleges today are a highly selective, gender diverse residential liberal arts institution with a single administration, faculty and curriculum but separate dean's offices, student governments, athletic programs and traditions. The Colleges are located in a small diverse city in the Finger Lakes region of New York State. With an enrollment of approximately 1,700, the Colleges provide a rigorous curriculum from which students choose two areas of concentration from a wide array of majors and minors, and offer three Master's programs. Creative and extensive programs of international study and public service are also at the core of the Colleges' mission.
Qualifications
- Ph.D. or ABD status in media studies or a related field.

The successful candidate should have a demonstrated record of teaching experience (at least one semester, full- or part-time). -
The successful candidate should also have a record of scholarly work in one or more of the following sub-fields in humanities-based global digital media studies: virtual/augmented reality, networked culture, social media, digital gaming, sound studies, digital humanities, and emerging media theories. - The candidate that is best suited to our programs mission is one who is devoted to inclusive pedagogy and whose work is concerned with the social implications of media: how digital technology contributes to, or helps override, imbalances of power.
- The successful candidate must articulate a desire to conduct research and teach at a small, residential, undergraduate college.
